Shimla: Mr Gaurav Singh, a 2013-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, assumed charge as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shimla district on Monday. Mr Singh outlined his priorities for the state capital, emphasizing strict action against drug trafficking, maintaining law and order, easing traffic congestion, and addressing crimes against women and children.
New Leadership in Shimla Police
SP Singh stressed that the Shimla police would prioritize the Himachal Pradesh government’s ongoing anti-drug campaign, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
“Our primary priorities will be maintaining law and order, controlling crime, and ensuring proper investigation of crimes,” Mr Singh said to Media. Highlighting the growing concern of drug trafficking in Shimla and the broader state, he stated that the police would tackle the issue from both demand and supply sides, including investigating financial networks related to drug operations.
Traffic Management and Urban Challenges
Shimla, being the state capital and a prominent tourist hub, presents unique policing challenges, including VIP movements and heavy tourist traffic. Singh outlined measures to improve traffic management, such as increasing police strength, deploying traffic constables strategically, and implementing alternative traffic routes during peak tourist seasons.
He also announced the use of social media platforms to keep tourists and commuters informed about traffic conditions, allowing citizens to plan their movements accordingly.
Anti-Drug Drive at the Forefront
Reiterating the Shimla police’s commitment to the state government’s anti-drug campaign, Singh emphasized that the initiative is a multi-stakeholder effort involving government authorities and civil society. “Shimla police is working at the forefront and will act strongly on both demand and supply aspects of drug trafficking,” he said.
Commitment to Law and Order
Singh stated that swift action will be taken against crimes against women and children, with investigations carried out within fixed timeframes. “Maintaining law and order, tackling drug trafficking, managing traffic, and preventing crimes against vulnerable groups will remain top priorities,” he affirmed.
