New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conducted a thorough inspection of Vasudev and Yamuna Bazar Ghats to review ongoing Yamuna cleanup initiatives, riverfront development, and monsoon preparedness. The officials emphasized that international experts will be involved in the Yamuna rejuvenation project to ensure sustainable and ecological restoration.
Public Concerns Drive Review
Since assuming office nearly a month ago, LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu has visited multiple locations in Delhi to engage with residents. Citizens highlighted air pollution, polluted Yamuna, water scarcity during summers, and flooding during monsoon as key concerns.
In response, the LG and CM visited the ghats to assess the current cleaning and development work, along with preparations to manage water flow and prevent flooding during the monsoon season.
Action Plan for Monsoon Preparedness and Riverfront Development
The officials instructed all concerned departments, including:
- Irrigation & Flood Control Department
- Delhi Jal Board
- DPCC
- Delhi Municipal Corporation
to prepare a comprehensive action plan with clear objectives and timelines for implementation.
Key directives included:
- Strict waste management and sewage control, with zero tolerance for illegal dumping
- Development of an eco-friendly green riverfront from Wazirabad to Okhla
- Promotion of wetlands, biodiversity parks, and sustainable green development
- Creation of walking and cycling tracks while preserving the natural form of the river
Officials also briefed the LG and CM on plans to ecologically restore the riverbanks, enhance biodiversity, and reduce pollution.
Long-Term Vision and Funding for Environment Protection
LG Sandhu emphasized that Yamuna rejuvenation is a priority for the Prime Minister and Home Minister, highlighting the strategic importance of the project.
CM Rekha Gupta stated that the Delhi government has been committed to the cleanliness and rejuvenation of the Yamuna since day one. For the financial year 2026-27, Delhi has allocated Rs 22,236 crore (approximately 21.44%) for environment protection and river rejuvenation.
Additional directives included:
- Removing encroachments along the river
- Dredging silt from the river and connected drains
- Ensuring smooth water flow and permanent solutions for flood-prone hotspots
The Chief Minister underscored that Yamuna rejuvenation is a long-term and sustainable process, requiring continuous efforts, public participation, and effective management.
