It seems that CBDT chief Nitin Gupta is unlikely to get a further extension in service and he will in all likelihood be succeeded by Pragya Sahay Saxena who is a 1987 batch IRS officer. Saxena will retire on September 30 this year unless given any extension in service. She is member (legislation) of the CBDT at present. Nitin Gupta was given an extension in tenure for nine months in September last year. He was originally supposed to retire on September 30 last year. A day before his retirement, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the re-appointment of Gupta as the CBDT Chairman on a contract basis from October 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. Now it is be seen what’s in store for another CBDT member Praveen Kumar who is scheduled to retire on August 31 this year.
