Indian Masterminds Stories

Gujarat has emerged as the nation’s best-performing state under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyay Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), a flagship initiative launched by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to ensure holistic development for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

The state’s exemplary achievements were formally recognised at the National Conclave in New Delhi on October 17, where President Ms. Droupadi Murmu presented Gujarat with the “Best Performing State” award for its outstanding implementation of the scheme.

Holistic Tribal Development Under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat has made remarkable strides in uplifting its tribal communities through integrated development. The state focuses on providing housing, electricity, water, healthcare, education, connectivity, and livelihood opportunities to its PVTG population.

So far, 14,552 housing units have been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (R), providing secure and dignified homes to tribal families. In addition, the state has achieved 100% electrification, bringing electricity to 6,630 previously unconnected households.

Healthcare and Education Initiatives

Gujarat has deployed 22 Mobile Medical Units, benefiting over 1.25 lakh tribal residents with healthcare services in remote areas. Education and nutrition have also received a boost with 67 operational Anganwadis and 13 hostels under construction for tribal children.

To strengthen literacy and skill development, the state is establishing 39 multipurpose centres, promoting adult education, health awareness, and vocational training.

Water, Connectivity, and Digital Inclusion

As part of the PM-JANMAN mission, Gujarat has achieved 100% tap water connectivity for 2,803 households. Infrastructure development has been accelerated with 45 new roads covering 94 km, enhancing connectivity for tribal regions.

Digital inclusion is a key priority, with 36 mobile towers approved and 21 already operational, providing 4G connectivity to 41 tribal habitations.

Sustainable Livelihoods Through Van Dhan Vikas

Gujarat has also focused on empowering tribal communities economically. 21 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras have been established, benefiting 1,050 individuals by supporting forest produce processing and value addition. These efforts aim to provide sustainable livelihoods while preserving traditional knowledge and resources.

Transforming Lives of PVTG Communities

Gujarat is home to five PVTG communities — Kathodi, Kotwalia, Padhar, Siddi, and Kolgha. The state continues to ensure equitable access to basic services, demonstrating a model approach to tribal welfare that other states can emulate.

The PM-JANMAN mission, launched nationally on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, November 15, 2023, aims to transform the lives of 75 PVTG communities across 18 states and one Union Territory through comprehensive development programs.
