Bilaspur: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gayatri Seva Sansthan (GSS) to implement an Integrated Water Conservation & Soil Health Revival Project in the Masturi and Belha blocks of Bilaspur district. The project, undertaken under SECL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, aims to enhance water security, improve soil fertility, and strengthen sustainable rural livelihoods in coalfield regions, benefiting over 69,000 people across 32 villages.
MoU Signing and Project Leadership
The MoU was signed in the presence of Biranchi Das, Director (HR), SECL, and formally executed by C.M. Verma, General Manager (CSR), SECL, along with Chetan Pandey, CEO of Gayatri Seva Sansthan. This collaboration represents a significant step in promoting ecological sustainability and community-driven resource management in Bilaspur’s rural areas.
Project Scope and Implementation
The initiative will cover 32 villages in Masturi and Belha blocks, with a focus on long-term ecological sustainability and agricultural resilience. Key activities under the project include:
- Construction and renovation of water conservation structures such as stop dams, stop dam-cum-causeways, and village ponds.
- Groundwater recharge initiatives to improve water availability.
- Soil restoration measures to enhance fertility and crop productivity.
- GIS-based planning for effective resource management.
- Community mobilization programs to encourage sustainable practices and active participation.
This comprehensive approach ensures that the project not only addresses immediate water and soil issues but also builds long-term climate-resilient agricultural practices.
Expected Impact on Rural Communities
The project is expected to directly benefit over 16,500 households and positively impact more than 69,000 residents. Improved water availability and soil fertility will enable better crop yields, strengthen food security, and foster sustainable livelihoods for farmers and rural communities.
Additionally, the initiative will empower local communities by encouraging participation in resource management and promoting awareness about environmental sustainability.
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
Through this flagship CSR initiative, SECL reinforces its commitment to natural resource conservation, rural development, and long-term ecological balance. By integrating modern planning techniques with community involvement, the project sets a benchmark for sustainable development in coalfield regions.
