The Vistadome Train Safari running along the scenic 107 km Mailani–Bichia route in Uttar Pradesh has rapidly emerged as a major tourist attraction. Despite a slow start last year due to seasonal closures, the unique jungle safari experience is now witnessing remarkable growth in passenger numbers, showcasing UP’s evolving eco-tourism landscape.
Tourist Footfall Surges After Service Resumption
Initially launched in May last year, the service remained paused soon after due to the closure of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in June. When services resumed in April this year, only four passengers boarded; however, by June, the number surged dramatically to 1,056 travelers.
With the latest season resuming in November, the safari registered 135 passengers in the very first week, indicating a sharp rise in popularity.
India’s First Vistadome Jungle Safari Experience
The Vistadome coach service—connecting Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary with Dudhwa Tiger Reserve—is the first such train-based jungle safari in the country. Developed by the Uttar Pradesh Eco Tourism Development Board in partnership with IRCTC, this panoramic train offers breathtaking views through large glass windows and transparent roofs.
Tourists enjoy unobstructed views of forests, wetlands, grasslands, woodlands, and wildlife habitats, making it a unique nature-immersion experience.
Train Route, Timings, and Stations
The Vistadome service runs from Bichia every Saturday and Sunday at 11:45 am, reaching Mailani at 4:10 pm.
The return journey begins from Mailani at 6:05 am and concludes at Bichia at 10:30 am.
The train halts at nine major stations: Bichia, Manjhara Purab, Khairatia Bandh Road, Tikunia, Belerayan, Dudhwa, Palia Kalan, Bhira Kheri, and Mailani.
Passengers can enjoy this forest journey for a fare of Rs. 270. Though paused during the monsoon from July 5, the service was relaunched in November and has already carried 135 passengers since November 8.
Eco-Tourism Boost Through School Eco Tours
To cultivate environmental awareness among children, the Eco Tourism Board has introduced a special weekly one-day educational eco tour for school students. Each batch consists of around 30 students who travel from Lucknow to Bichia and board the Vistadome Safari.
The first tour took place on May 4, and so far, five batches have been completed, with nearly 150 students participating.
Government’s Vision for Nature-Connected Tourism
Tourism and culture minister Mr. Jaiveer Singh highlighted the transformative potential of the initiative. He stated that experiencing forests firsthand helps build a deep connection with nature, fostering respect for wildlife conservation. He described the Vistadome Safari as an inspiring journey that sparks curiosity, awareness, and pride in Uttar Pradesh’s natural heritage.
