In a significant push toward border-area development and rural empowerment, Uttarakhand is set to transform 91 villages along the India-China and India-Nepal borders into model villages. These villages have been identified under the Central Government’s Vibrant Village Programme, aimed at strengthening infrastructure, boosting livelihood opportunities, and curbing outward migration from frontier regions.

Minister Reviews Progress, Stresses Timely and Effective Implementation
During a review meeting held on Wednesday, the Rural Development Commissioner presented an extensive progress report to Rural Development Minister Mr. Ganesh Joshi. The Minister emphasized the importance of efficient execution, robust public outreach, and timely completion of developmental activities. He instructed officials to focus on holistic development that enhances the living standards of border communities.
Strengthening Border Infrastructure and Curbing Migration
Mr. Ganesh Joshi highlighted that developing these regions as model villages aligns with the national vision of securing border areas while uplifting local populations. The initiative seeks to improve essential services, generate sustainable livelihoods, and ensure accessibility to critical amenities, thereby addressing the long-standing issue of migration from remote mountainous regions.
Major Investment Proposed for Infrastructure, Tourism, and Cultural Promotion
To enhance accessibility and economic activities in 51 villages of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh—located along the China border—the state government submitted a comprehensive work plan of Rs. 520.15 crore to the Union Home Ministry. Of this, the state has already received over Rs. 110 crore.
The plan includes developing connecting roads, promoting local culture, strengthening tourism infrastructure, and establishing modern amenities that support long-term community development.
Vibrant Village Programme 2.0 Progressing in Nepal-Bordering Regions
Under the Vibrant Village Programme 2.0, data collection and verification are actively underway in 40 villages across Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Udham Singh Nagar along the Nepal border. To further improve road connectivity, Rs. 119.44 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of five new roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Pithoragarh district.
