In a significant announcement ahead of Uttarakhand’s 25th Foundation Day, Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami declared a substantial increase in pensions for the activists who played a vital role in the creation of the state. The decision, announced at a programme on Saturday, reflects the government’s commitment to honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for Uttarakhand’s statehood.
Mr. Dhami said the state government would also name key infrastructure projects and public facilities after martyrs of the movement as a tribute to their contribution. The move aligns with the government’s larger vision to strengthen the identity and legacy of Uttarakhand’s statehood struggle.
Enhanced Financial Support for Statehood Heroes
The Chief Minister announced that pensions for statehood activists who spent at least seven days in jail or were injured during the agitation would be increased from Rs. 6,000 per month to Rs. 7,000 per month.
Pensions for other registered activists will rise from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 5,500 per month, while activists who suffered severe injuries or were completely disabled during the agitation will now receive Rs. 30,000 per month instead of Rs. 20,000. Additionally, such individuals will be provided with a medical attendant for their daily care.
In a compassionate move, Mr. Dhami also announced that dependents of activists who lost their lives during the statehood movement will now receive a monthly pension of Rs. 5,500, up from the previous Rs. 3,000.
Recognising Sacrifice and Inspiring Future Generations
The announcement comes as Uttarakhand celebrates its silver jubilee — marking 25 years since it was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in 2000. Mr. Dhami emphasized that the state’s development journey would always be linked to the courage and vision of those who fought for its creation.
“The sacrifices of our statehood fighters laid the foundation for Uttarakhand’s progress. It is our responsibility to ensure that their contributions are never forgotten,” Mr. Dhami said.
By increasing pensions and promising memorial recognition, the state government aims to not only provide financial assistance but also instill pride among citizens in their shared history.
Governance with Gratitude and Development
Observers say the decision highlights the Dhami government’s governance model that combines social responsibility with economic inclusion. As Uttarakhand moves forward with major infrastructural and tourism initiatives, the symbolic step of honouring statehood activists underlines the government’s focus on inclusive development rooted in respect for history.
The pension hike is expected to benefit thousands of registered activists and their families across the state, offering both financial relief and emotional recognition for their lifelong dedication to Uttarakhand’s identity.
