Reinforcing his government’s commitment to balanced and sustainable development, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday launched a nine-point environmental-economic policy aimed at promoting eco-conscious governance while ensuring economic progress.
Mr. Dhami made the announcement while inaugurating the 24th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) at Doon University, Dehradun. The event witnessed the participation of over 400 delegates from across India, including researchers, policymakers, and thought leaders.
9-Point Policy: A Vision for Balanced Growth
Speaking at the event, Mr. Dhami said, “Our government is working with full commitment and determination to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while ensuring harmony between the economy, society, and the environment.”
The new nine-point policy is designed to:
- Promote eco-sensitive economic planning
- Strengthen climate-resilient infrastructure
- Enhance conservation of natural resources
- Accelerate green energy transitions
- Encourage sustainable tourism practices
- Support inclusive, equitable social development
- Integrate local communities into green decision-making
- Expand environmental education and awareness
- Foster innovation in sustainable agriculture and water management
The initiative marks a key step in aligning state-level development planning with national and global climate action frameworks, including India’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Doon University Hosts Experts to Shape Sustainability Dialogue
The three-day IASSI conference at Doon University has become a platform for intellectual dialogue on issues ranging from climate resilience and social inclusion to resource sustainability and economic equity.
Delegates are expected to discuss policy models, data-driven solutions, and governance innovations to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Uttarakhand’s Development: Green and Inclusive
Known for its ecologically sensitive Himalayan terrain, Uttarakhand faces unique challenges in balancing environmental protection with infrastructure development. The Dhami government’s approach aims to navigate these dual priorities through careful policy planning and inter-sectoral coordination.
In recent years, the state has focused on:
- Disaster-resilient infrastructure
- Sustainable tourism regulation
- Green energy investments, including solar and hydroelectric projects
- Protection of forest ecosystems and wildlife corridors
A Step Toward India’s Climate Leadership
By launching this policy framework, Uttarakhand becomes one of the few Indian states to adopt a formalized, multi-sector approach to sustainable development. The initiative also supports the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and the State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC).
Experts at the event praised the policy’s timing and ambition, noting that climate-focused state policies are vital to India’s long-term environmental and economic security.
