Eco Warrior Awards 2023: Celebrating India’s Unsung Guardians of the Green

Indian Masterminds, in collaboration with the IFS Association, celebrated The Eco Warrior Awards 2023 to honor Indian Forest Service officers for their exceptional contributions to forest conservation, wildlife protection, and sustainable development and celebrate their crucial efforts.

In the heart of India’s vast forests, amidst the towering trees and elusive wildlife, work the unsung heroes of our natural world – the Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers. These dedicated eco-warriors devote their lives to forest conservation, wildlife protection, and the sustainable development of our ecosystems. Recognizing the profound impact of their work, Indian Masterminds introduced the Eco Warrior Award in 2023 to honor their remarkable contributions.

A NEW ERA OF RECOGNITION: THE ECO WARRIOR AWARD

For years, the contributions of IFS officers remained underappreciated on the national stage. The Eco Warrior Award was introduced to fill this void, providing a platform to showcase the achievements of these exemplary individuals. On November 3rd, 2023, at the All India Radio Auditorium in Sansad Marg, New Delhi, the inaugural Eco Warrior Awards celebrated these extraordinary individuals and their noble cause.

This year, the tradition continues with the second edition of the Eco Warrior Awards, set to take place on September 11th, 2024, at the Ambedkar International Centre, Janpath, New Delhi. This event is an opportunity for the nation to honor the achievements of IFS officers and renew its commitment to environmental conservation.

A PLATFORM FOR KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE: PANEL DISCUSSIONS

The Eco Warrior Awards function is more than just an awards ceremony; it is a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange. The event kicked off with panel discussions that brought together forest experts and IFS officers from across the country. The conversations revolved around pressing topics such as forest conservation, sustainable development, and the integration of eco-friendly measures in both urban and remote areas.

The panels featured voices from Delhi to Arunachal Pradesh, with IFS officers engaging in open discussions on subjects like “Increasing the Forest Cover,” “Technology and Environment,” “How to Promote Eco-Tourism,” and “Use of Social Media in Conservation.” These discussions underscored the diverse challenges and opportunities in the field of conservation and highlighted the innovative approaches taken by IFS officers.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN CONSERVATION

The panel on technology in conservation featured IFS officers Mr. Mohan Rao and Mr. Biswajeet Mishra. Mr. Rao, who comes from an engineering background, emphasized how his technical expertise allows him to harness technology more effectively for conservation. The panel discussed how cutting-edge tools and techniques can optimize conservation efforts and protect India’s rich biodiversity.

PROMOTING ECO-TOURISM

Guest speaker Millo Tasser, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Wildlife, Arunachal Pradesh, spoke about the potential of eco-tourism as a means of conservation. He emphasized the need for responsible tourism practices that benefit both the environment and local communities. The other speaker, Mr. Manoj Kumar, MD, Jungle Lodge & Resorts, Bengaluru, said that eco-tourism is not mass tourism, it is class tourism.

LEVERAGING SOCIAL MEDIA FOR CONSERVATION

In the digital age, social media has emerged as a powerful tool for raising awareness and promoting conservation efforts. IFS officers Mr. S. K. Awasthi, Ms. Sudha Ramen, and Mr. Parveen Kaswan participated in a panel discussing the role of social media in conservation. They highlighted how platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook can amplify the voices of conservationists and engage the public in the fight to protect India’s forests and wildlife.

THE 2023 ECO WARRIOR AWARDEES

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2023 Eco Warrior Awards by Union Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav. The awardees, recognized for their exemplary work in various aspects of forest and wildlife conservation, were:

– Basu Kannogia – Award for Forest Protection

– Dr. Mohan Ram – Award for Wildlife Conservation

– Ritesh Sirothia – Award for Wildlife Protection

– Biswajit Mishra – Award for Best Use of Technology for Conservation

– Millo Tasser – Award for Community Connect

Each awardee received a citation and a trophy, symbolizing the nation’s appreciation for their tireless efforts. In his speech, Minister Yadav encouraged those who did not receive an award not to be disheartened, reminding them that they are equally valuable and will have their chances in the future. He emphasized that wildlife conservation is not just a service but a mission, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that each IFS officer is a “karmayogi” dedicated to protecting the nation’s natural heritage.

A TRIBUTE TO THE ECO-WARRIORS

The ceremony concluded with a beautiful live sand art performance by noted artist Niteesh, who captivated the audience with his creative tribute to the Indian Forest Service. The event ended on a high note, with a group photo of the awardees, Union ministers, and Indian Masterminds staff – a fitting celebration of the unsung heroes who work tirelessly to preserve India’s forests and wildlife.

As we look forward to the second edition of the Eco Warrior Awards in 2024, let us continue to support these eco-warriors and their noble mission. Their work is crucial in safeguarding our environment for future generations, and their dedication deserves all the recognition it can get.
