  • Strengthening strategic trust between the two countries

The discussions will also take place against the backdrop of Japan’s revision of its Three Principles on Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology, creating scope for closer defence-industrial cooperation.

Japanese Defence Minister Visits Western Naval Command

Koizumi, who is on his maiden visit to India, visited the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on August 19 ahead of his meeting with Rajnath Singh.

During the visit, he held discussions with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan.

The Japanese delegation was briefed on the Indian Navy’s:

  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Operational capabilities
  • Maritime security preparedness
  • Naval operations

Koizumi also inspected a Guard of Honour at the Western Naval Command.

From Gaurav Stambh to INS Chennai

The Japanese Defence Minister began his Mumbai engagements by laying a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard.

He subsequently visited INS Chennai, India’s indigenously built guided-missile destroyer.

The visit provided an opportunity for the Japanese delegation to gain a closer understanding of India’s indigenous naval capabilities.

India and Japan Eye Stronger Indo-Pacific Partnership

India and Japan share a vision of a free, open, resilient and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The two-day visit by Japan’s Defence Minister reflects the growing momentum in bilateral defence cooperation and the intention of both countries to expand their strategic partnership.

The upcoming talks are expected to provide a platform for both sides to develop a roadmap for deeper defence and security cooperation.

Visit Follows India-Japan Annual Summit

Koizumi’s visit comes weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited New Delhi for the Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During the summit, India and Japan agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and security, providing further political momentum to the defence ministers’ upcoming discussions.

The latest engagement is expected to build on this momentum and translate the broader strategic understanding between the two countries into greater maritime cooperation, defence technology partnerships and Make-in-India opportunities.
