Patna, December 4: The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this December, marking a transformative journey in connecting rural settlements across Bihar. Over the past two and a half decades, 60,474 kilometers of rural roads have been constructed in the state, drastically improving access to education, healthcare, markets, employment, and other essential services.

Since its launch on December 25, 2000, PMGSY has focused on connecting previously unlinked villages and hamlets with all-weather roads, creating a significant impact on rural life and livelihoods.

PMGSY Bihar Rural Road Connectivity: Progress and Milestones Over the Years

The growth of rural road connectivity under PMGSY in Bihar has been remarkable –

  • 2000–2005: 723 km of rural roads constructed
  • 2005–2010: 8,271 km of roads built, connecting settlements with populations above 1,000
  • 2010–2015: 32,625 km constructed under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar
  • 2015–2020: 51,489 km completed
  • 2020–Nov 2025: Total reaches 60,474 km

Additionally, 1,584 bridges have been built, and road connectivity has been extended to 31,280 settlements with populations over 500, reflecting a significant expansion from the scheme’s early focus on settlements above 1,000 inhabitants.

Convenience Centers Connected: A Boost for Rural Life

Under PMGSY, 30,446 convenience centers in Bihar have gained access to all-weather roads, including –

  • 6,331 agricultural markets
  • 7,741 educational institutions
  • 3,433 health centers
  • 12,941 transportation hubs

This connectivity has accelerated rural development, improved the quality of life, and strengthened the rural economy by providing farmers direct access to markets, ensuring children can safely reach schools, and enhancing healthcare accessibility.

PMGSY Bihar Rural Road Connectivity: Social, Economic, and Security Benefits 

The scheme has had far-reaching impacts beyond infrastructure –

Economic growth: Boosted rural commerce and market access

Education and health: Easier access to schools and health centers

Law and order: Improved accessibility has aided law enforcement and administrative efficiency

Bihar has consistently been recognized at the national level, winning multiple awards for building the longest roads, connecting the highest number of settlements, and adopting innovative construction technologies.

Nationwide 25th Anniversary Celebrations

The central and state governments are jointly commemorating the 25th anniversary of PMGSY in December 2025. Alongside nationwide celebrations, a detailed national report highlighting the scheme’s success, achievements, and transformative impact across India is being released.
