New Delhi: The TEJAS MK-1A indigenous advanced fighter jet has completed its critical weapons trials, marking a major milestone in India’s defence aviation program.

The programme, led by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), successfully fired air-to-air and air-to-ground armaments, including the Astra BVR missile and ASRAAM close-combat missile, and finished all software updates required to qualify the jets for delivery to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Details of TEJAS MK-1A Weapons Trials

HAL has officially stated that the TEJAS MK-1A weapons trials — including firing of key weapons like the Astra beyond-visual-range missile and the British ASRAAM missile — are complete. Air-to-air and air-to-ground firing tests, along with necessary software fixes, have now been accomplished, bringing the aircraft closer to operational clearance and certification.

This completion is crucial because weapons integration and launch validation are essential steps before the jets can enter service with the IAF. The successful trials demonstrate that the Tejas MK-1A meets key performance criteria laid out in its original contract.

Five Jets Ready for Delivery: Status and Numbers

According to HAL sources, five Tejas MK-1A jets are fully built and ready for delivery to the IAF after completing weapons trials. Additional nine aircraft have also been manufactured and test-flown, but await delivery of engines from GE Aerospace to begin their full certification process.

HAL has received a limited number of engines from GE so far, but the supply situation is described as improving, which aligns with production plans.

Background: Contract and Indian Defence Goals

The Tejas MK-1A is part of a Rs 36,400 crore order placed by the Indian government in 2021 for 83 aircraft — the follow-on batch after the original Mark-1 series. The aircraft is designed to replace older fighters and strengthen the Indian Air Force’s frontline combat capability.

In addition to the original 83 jets, a follow-on contract for 97 more MK-1A aircraft was signed, increasing the total planned procurement and showcasing commitment to indigenous defence capability.

What is the Importance of TEJAS MK-1A Weapons Trials

The Tejas MK-1A, often called India’s next-generation light combat aircraft, provides a boost to the nation’s defence industry. It represents a major leap from earlier models with improved avionics, weapons integration capabilities, radar systems, and mission computers developed domestically or integrated with global systems.

By achieving this milestone, India moves closer to reducing dependence on foreign aircraft and establishing a competitive home-grown fighter platform for decades to come. The programme also supports the broader “Make in India” initiative for defence manufacturing.
