The transformative initiative led by IFS officer Puneet Nayyar in Surat, Gujarat, has significantly improved the livelihoods of tribal communities in over 45 villages. Established in 2015-16, the Visdalia cluster and the Enterprise Facility Centre (EFC) have created over 15 enterprises and nurtured more than 100 entrepreneurs, positively impacting over 4,000 families. The initiative promotes sustainable livelihoods by reducing reliance on forest resources and enhancing local craftsmanship, particularly among the Kotwalia tribe, known for their bamboo products.
Training programs elevated traditional skills, leading to the successful branding of their products as “Vinaan,” achieving a turnover of one crore by 2019-20. Additional ventures like the VanSree Canteen and a millet-based bakery further empowered the community, especially women. A Rural Mall was established to showcase village products, further enhancing market access.
In this video interview with Indian Masterminds, Puneet Nayyar discusses how the Visdalia initiative transformed tribal communities in Surat, empowering them through skill development, sustainable enterprises, and improved livelihoods, creating lasting impact.
Agricultural development initiatives have allowed local farmers to increase their productivity and income significantly, with some households seeing monthly earnings rise from 15,000 to 40,000. The project has gained national recognition for its innovative approach to bamboo craft and has supported educational initiatives, including a library for competitive exam preparation, enriching the community’s future.
The initiative began with the Kotwalia tribe, known for their bamboo craftsmanship. Puneet and his team provided training to enhance their traditional skills, leading to the creation of diverse bamboo products, including furniture. This successful transition was branded as ‘Vinaan’ and quickly gained popularity, achieving a turnover of one crore by 2020.
The initiative garnered national recognition, leading to the state government’s decision to establish four more clusters.
Puneet’s holistic approach to community-driven development not only boosted economic opportunities but also uplifted the social status of women and children, fostering a culture of education and empowerment. The Visdalia model has become a benchmark for sustainable development, demonstrating the powerful impact of innovative partnerships between local communities, government, and private organizations.
