The largest species among wild cattle, the Indian Bison also called Gaur, is being reintroduced in the Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh in a bid to revive their population.
Gaur is marked as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
Mostly found in South and Southeast Asia, the Gaur has already been locally extinct from many areas including in Sri Lanka. In the last few decades, the population of this heavy-weight herbivore has been on the decline.
Senior IFS officer Ramesh shared a tweet about the current efforts underway to revive Gaurs across the region.
