At 54 years of age, she is a force to reckon with, and fills both her admirers and detractors with awe with her energy and dynamism. She is Delhi Police’s superwoman Kiran Sethi. To know why she is referred to as Lady Singham, read her story – a story of courage and passion for helping people.

HER INSPIRATION

Kiran Sethi graduated from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi and, thereafter, did her Masters in Social Work (MSW).

Her mother used to run a dhaba in Rajendra Nagar, Delhi. Kiran saw the struggle of her mother to give her children good education.

Getting inspired by her mother, she promised herself that one day she would be a source of strength to every girl. Very soon, she took the responsibility of her brother and sister into her own hands. In 1987, she joined Delhi Police as a constable and, from then on, associated herself with service to society.

As of today, she is in-charge of Pink Women Police Outpost in Shradhanand Marg, Kamla Market area.

SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING

From early days in her career, she has been an instructor of self-defense. She is a black belt in Judo and Karate, and, also, teaches yoga and aerobics along with self-defense techniques. Apart from this, she is into kickboxing and represented India in this sport in 1999. She achieved second place in the competition.

Ms. Sethi is the first policewoman of Delhi Police, who has given self-defense training to men, as well. Apart from schools and colleges, she has also given training in all the big hospitals of Delhi, MNCs, CBI, and children of Delhi Police personnel.

She has also taught self-defense tricks to visually impaired, deaf, and mentally challenged children, for which she has received much appreciation.

So far, Ms. Sethi has taught self-defense techniques to more than eight lakh students by visiting more than 5000 schools and colleges. She says that the goal of her life is social service. She wants to serve people till her last breath.

Last year, during the Covid 19 pandemic, Ms. Kiran Sethi was posted as Sub-Inspector at the GB Road Police Station. Here, she helped sex workers by organizing yoga, meditation camps and roping in doctors for regular health check-ups.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Kiran Sethi has many awards in her name, one of these is a Limca Book of Record in the year 2015. The then Home Minister Rajnath Singh was present during the occasion when she was conferred the award.

In 2016, the Delhi Commission for Women honoured her with the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award. She received the ‘I Women Global Award’ in 2018, ‘Rakshak Award’ in 2019, President’s Police Medal in 2020 and earlier in 1999 for exceptional work in Delhi Police service.
