UPSC’s Armed Forces Headquarter Civil Services: Your Chance to Serve in the Army

Indian Masterminds Stories

Continuing our special series on job opportunities offered through the joint UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE), today, we provide information about three more services – AFHCS, DANICS, DANIAS. Among the 24 services provided by UPSC CSE, these three are Group B Services. Candidates can be eligible for them based on their AIR in the exam or their preferences.

ARMED FORCES HEADQUARTER CIVIL SERVICES

Established in 1968, Armed Forces Headquarter Civil Services comes under the Ministry of Defence and is headed by the Defence Secretary. This cadre falls under Group B of Civil Services and recruitment is done through UPSC CSE.

The major role of this cadre is to provide basic support services, which includes secretarial staff and clerical staff to Indian Armed Forces and Inter-Services Organisations.

DANICS OR DANIAS

Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Civil Service (DANICS) has been renamed as Delhi, Andaman, Nicobar Islands, Lakshwadeep, Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu Administrative Service (DANIAS). This cadre also falls under the Group B civil services and acts as a feeder service to the Indian Administrative Service. The officers are recruited through the Joint UPSC CSE and are responsible for the administrative functions of the Delhi and other Union Territories.
After completing the training period of two years, the officers inducted into this service are posted as Assistant Collector. They can also be posted in autonomous bodies like Municipal Corporation or district administration or in ministries. At senior level, the officers can also be inducted into the AGMUT cadre.

DANIPS

DANIPS stands for Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Police Service. Earlier called the Union Territories Police Service, DANIPS is a federal police service, administering Delhi and the Union Territories of India.

Like DANIAS, DANIPS is also a Group B civil service and recruitment is done through UPSC CSE. After completing the probation period of two years, DANIPS officers are appointed as Assistant Commissioners of Police in Delhi or as Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPO) in Union Territories. They can be promoted to higher ranks such as Deputy Commissioner of Police or Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police. They can also be promoted to IPS and inducted into AGMUT.
