“Dreams Don’t Have Shortcuts” – Sharan Kambale’s Remarkable UPSC Journey

IPS officer Sharan Kambale's journey from rural struggles, studying by kerosene lamp, to achieving UPSC success proves that focus and determination can overcome any obstacle.

Like many of us, IPS officer Sharan Kambale’s childhood was filled with dreams, but his path to those dreams was anything but easy. Growing up in a village where electricity was a rarity, his early years were marked by a lack of basic infrastructure. His parents, though illiterate, understood the importance of education and did everything they could to support their son’s aspirations, even if that meant facing tough circumstances.

In an exclusive video interview with Indian Masterminds, Mr. Kambale shares how the absence of electricity didn’t stop him from studying. He recalls how, after dusk, a kerosene lamp became his only companion as he poured over his textbooks.

Like many rural students, the commute to school was another challenge. Instead of a comfortable bus ride, Mr. Kambale often hung onto the roof of the bus to save money. It wasn’t just about getting to school—it was his chance to revise and prepare for the exams on the go.

After completing his 12th grade, Sharan’s efforts earned him a spot at Walchand College of Engineering through the Maharashtra CET. But it was his academic excellence at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore, where he pursued an M.Tech in Electronic Systems Engineering, that truly set him apart. Despite being offered a highly lucrative job at Rambus with an impressive salary, his mind was set on one thing: UPSC.

In the video, Sharan Kambale explains how he turned down the job offer, even when the company came back with a higher salary. “I knew what I wanted,” he says with conviction, highlighting the clarity of purpose that drove him.

With a scholarship from the Maharashtra government, he moved to Delhi to begin his UPSC preparation. The COVID-19 pandemic briefly sent him back to his village, but his commitment to his goal never wavered. Like many aspirants, Sharan faced his share of disruptions, yet his focus remained on the future he had envisioned.

His story is more than just one of academic success; it’s about overcoming challenges that might seem insurmountable. From studying with limited light to commuting with little comfort, Sharan Kambale’s journey is proof that with determination, every obstacle can be turned into a stepping stone.
