New Delhi: India has taken a major step forward in space technology with the IN-SPACe satellite technology transfer to PierSight, aimed at strengthening indigenous capabilities in Earth observation and maritime surveillance

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has formalised a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with Ahmedabad-based startup PierSight.

This move allows a previously classified satellite component developed by ISRO to enter the private sector. The IN-SPACe satellite technology transfer to PierSight is expected to boost domestic manufacturing, reduce import dependency, and enhance India’s position in the global space economy.

Details of IN-SPACe Satellite Technology Transfer

In a landmark decision, IN-SPACe has enabled the transfer of a critical satellite technology from ISRO to PierSight.

  • The technology was previously classified due to its strategic importance
  • It will now be used by a private startup for advanced satellite development
  • The move reflects India’s shift toward a collaborative space ecosystem

This step is aligned with India’s vision to open up the space sector for private players while maintaining national security standards.

What is the Transferred Technology

The transferred component is believed to be essential for next-generation satellite systems.

  • It supports Earth observation missions
  • It enhances maritime monitoring capabilities
  • It is linked with high-precision orbital sensors

Due to its sensitive nature, detailed specifications remain classified. However, it is considered highly reliable and already tested in space missions.

How PierSight Will Use the Technology

PierSight, a space-tech startup based in Ahmedabad, focuses on ocean and maritime surveillance.

  • It uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology
  • It integrates Automatic Identification System (AIS) data
  • It provides real-time ocean monitoring solutions

With this technology, PierSight will integrate ISRO-developed systems into its satellite constellation, improving performance and reducing development time.

Faster Innovation Through IN-SPACe Satellite Technology Transfer

The Transfer of Technology (ToT) gives PierSight a major advantage.

  • It reduces years of research and testing
  • It lowers risks associated with space hardware
  • It accelerates mission timelines

This allows startups to focus more on innovation rather than starting from scratch.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Space

The government aims to strengthen domestic capabilities through such initiatives.

  • Encourages indigenous manufacturing
  • Reduces reliance on foreign aerospace components
  • Promotes Indian startups in the global space market

This move is part of India’s broader strategy to become a global space manufacturing hub.

Policy Shift: From Government Control to Collaboration

India’s space policy is evolving.

  • Earlier, space activities were dominated by government agencies
  • Now, private companies are becoming active participants
  • IN-SPACe is acting as a bridge between ISRO and industry

This partnership model is expected to unlock innovation and investment.

Strategic and Economic Impact

The successful use of this technology will:

  • Enhance India’s maritime security
  • Support applications like illegal fishing detection and oil spill monitoring
  • Improve border and coastal surveillance

It will also strengthen India’s position in the global space economy by promoting commercialisation of indigenous technologies.
