IPS officer Sandeep M. Tamgadge’s story is about much more than just earning a uniform. It’s about a life shaped by discipline, adaptability, and a strong sense of service. From growing up in an army family to serving as a senior IPS officer in Nagaland, his journey shows what it truly means to dedicate yourself to the nation — especially in a place that many people don’t fully understand.

In an exclusive video interview with Indian Masterminds, Mr Tamgadgewho is the 2001 batch IPS officer of the Nagaland cadre shared about his UPSC journey in detail. He is currently serving as Additional Director General of Police, Nagaland.

A CHILDHOOD ON THE MOVE

Mr Tamgadge grew up moving from place to place because of his father’s postings in the Indian Army. Living in an army household taught him discipline early on and made him comfortable adapting to new places — a skill that later helped him greatly in his career.

He studied at Sainik School, Satara, which trains students mainly for the armed forces. Although he later pursued a degree in biochemistry, the discipline and training from Sainik School left a lasting impact. It was during his graduation days in Nagpur that the idea of joining the civil services became strong.

Mr Tamgadge first joined public service in 1997 after clearing the civil services exam and working in the CBI as a Group A officer. But he wasn’t satisfied yet. In 2001, he cleared the UPSC Civil Services Exam again — this time getting into the Indian Police Service (IPS) and being posted in Nagaland.

Talking about his preparation days, IPS Tamgadge recalls a time without the internet or online resources. Preparation meant smartly covering the syllabus, practising answer writing, and managing time well. His approach was never about studying everything under the sun but about being clear, concise, and strategic.

Initially, his father had hoped Mr Tamgadge would join the military. But seeing his son serve the country through the IPS made him equally proud.

TRAINING, GROWTH AND CHALLENGES

Mr Tamgadge’s training at top institutions like LBSNAA (Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration) and SVP National Police Academy was tough, especially physically. However, the early discipline from Sainik School helped him adjust. He also noticed that training methods have evolved over time, becoming more scientific and focused on individual needs.

Having spent most of his 20+ years of service in Nagaland, Tamgadge says his experience there has been “truly remarkable”. He believes that each region has its own needs, and good administration is about adapting to local realities rather than applying the same methods everywhere.

IPS Tamgadge advises young aspirants and officers to look at civil services as a platform full of opportunities to make a real difference. He reminds them that while the challenges are real, the rewards are even greater if one works with sincerity and dedication. According to him, public service remains one of the most satisfying careers for those who want to help build the nation.
