Indian Masterminds Stories

Nestled amidst the lush Maikal ranges and the pristine Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary, Sarodha Dadar village in Kabirdham district, Chhattisgarh, has etched its name on the national map of rural tourism. This picturesque hamlet recently clinched the Best Tourism Village 2023 (Silver Category) award on World Tourism Day, outshining 795 contenders across the country. Behind this achievement is the vision and relentless work of IFS officer Shashi Kumar, a 2018-batch officer from the Chhattisgarh cadre and the Divisional Forest Officer of Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary.

A VILLAGE THAT BREATHES NATURE AND CULTURE

Perched at an altitude of nearly 3,000 feet above sea level, Sarodha Dadar offers an enchanting mix of natural beauty and rich tribal heritage. Home to the Gond and Baiga tribes, the village immerses visitors in authentic tribal culture. From their vibrant dances to intricate tattoo art, handmade jewelry, and bamboo crafts, every aspect of their lifestyle resonates with the rhythms of the forest.

“This village is a treasure trove of biodiversity and culture. Our aim has been to strike a balance between showcasing its natural beauty and preserving its essence,” Shashi Kumar shared with Indian Masterminds.

Tourists flock to Sarodha Dadar year-round, with numbers swelling in the winter months when the temperatures often dip below zero. Nearby attractions like the Ranidhara, Arjhori, and Saraidah waterfalls, along with the historic Bhoramdeo Temple, add to the village’s allure.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE CORE

Under the guidance of Shashi Kumar and his team, Sarodha Dadar has embraced eco-friendly practices that elevate its tourism model. Plastic use is strictly prohibited, and visitors are welcomed with garlands made from munja grass, served meals on donapattal (leaf plates), and accommodated in traditional mud houses or eco-resorts.

The Baiga Ethnic Resort, a highlight of the area, provides an immersive experience, allowing guests to stay amidst nature while enjoying tribal performances and authentic Baiga cuisine.

Shashi Kumar believes community involvement is pivotal to the village’s success. “The villagers are the heart of this initiative. Their efforts in maintaining cleanliness, engaging tourists, and promoting eco-tourism have been phenomenal,” he said.

ACTIVITIES THAT CAPTIVATE VISITORS

Sarodha Dadar’s charm extends beyond its scenic beauty. Visitors can:

  • Trek to the Rani Dhara Waterfall through dense forests.
  • Participate in plantation drives with locals.
  • Enjoy traditional Baiga dance performances around bonfires.
  • Take part in guided butterfly tours, led by “Titli Mitras” (Butterfly Friends).

Plans are also underway to develop family-friendly activities like horse riding and recreational facilities. The village’s cooler climate and tranquil surroundings make it a favorite among travelers from across India and abroad, including tourists from England, Switzerland, and Australia.

A MODEL FOR RURAL TOURISM

Sarodha Dadar’s recognition as the Best Tourism Village stems from its excellence in parameters such as conservation of natural and cultural resources, eco-friendly practices, and infrastructure development. The villagers’ commitment to sustainable tourism has made it a shining example for other rural destinations.

In collaboration with private firms, the district administration has also organized events like the Bhoramdeo Mahotsav and influencer meets to boost tourism further. These initiatives have not only attracted visitors but also provided employment opportunities for the locals.

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS

While Sarodha Dadar basks in its success, Shashi Kumar and his team are focused on enhancing the tourism experience. Plans include developing more trekking routes, expanding eco-resorts, and positioning the village as a butterfly haven, with the Orange Oakleaf butterfly as its mascot.

“Tourism is not just about visiting a place; it’s about experiencing its soul. At Sarodha Dadar, every visitor leaves with a piece of its essence,” Shashi Kumar told Indian Masterminds.

A VILLAGE WORTH VISITING

Located just 50 kilometers from Kawardha and 5 kilometers from Chilphi Valley, Sarodha Dadar is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, culture seekers, and anyone yearning for a serene getaway. With its perfect blend of natural wonders and tribal heritage, this small village is making big waves in India’s tourism landscape.

As the sun sets over the Maikal ranges, casting a golden glow on Sarodha Dadar, it’s clear that this hidden gem has a story worth telling—and experiencing.
