On 19 December 2000, in the rural heartland of Punjab, a girl was born into a family rooted in agriculture. Years later, that girl would secure All India Rank 15 in the Civil Services Examination 2025, one of the toughest examinations in the country.

Simrandeep Kaur, a young aspirant from Punjab, entered the national spotlight with her remarkable performance in the exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Her achievement not only marked a personal milestone but also became a moment of pride for her family, village, and the state.

Behind the rank lies a story shaped by education, cultural roots, disciplined preparation, and a strong connection to her community.

ROOTS IN PUNJAB’S SOIL

Simrandeep Kaur comes from Birarhwal village in Nabha block of Patiala district, a place where agriculture forms the backbone of everyday life. Growing up in a farming household meant she witnessed firsthand the realities of rural life: the challenges faced by farmers, the importance of education, and the aspiration for better opportunities.

Her father, Kuldeep Singh, is a vegetable farmer, while her mother Amandeep Kaur manages the household. In a family without a long legacy in government services, the idea of entering India’s top administrative services was both ambitious and inspiring.

Yet, the environment she grew up in gave her a clear understanding of the needs of rural communities—an understanding that would later shape her interest in public administration.

ACADEMIC FOUNDATIONS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

Education played a central role in Simrandeep’s journey.

She pursued both her Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) and Master’s degree (M.A.) from Punjabi University, located on Rajpura Road in Patiala, Punjab.

During her academic years, she chose Political Science as her primary field of study. The subject offered insights into governance, international relations, public policy, and the functioning of democratic institutions.

This academic background later aligned perfectly with her UPSC optional subject — Political Science and International Relations (PSIR).

Her years at university helped shape her analytical thinking and deepened her interest in how governance systems work and how policy decisions influence people’s lives.

THREE ATTEMPTS AND A DEFINING RESULT

The road to the civil services is rarely simple. Simrandeep cleared the examination in her third attempt, a journey that required years of preparation, discipline, and self-evaluation.

Each stage of the examination—the Preliminary exam, the Mains, and the Personality Test—demands both intellectual depth and mental endurance. Like thousands of aspirants across the country, she navigated long study hours, extensive reading, and continuous revision.

Her preparation eventually culminated in the moment when the UPSC CSE 2025 results were announced and her name appeared among the top ranks, securing AIR 15.

For her village and her family, the news travelled quickly. What began as an individual goal turned into a shared celebration.

CHOOSING POLITICAL SCIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Simrandeep’s choice of Political Science and International Relations as her optional subject reflected her academic grounding.

The subject explores themes such as:

  • political thought
  • governance structures
  • global diplomacy
  • public policy
  • international cooperation

With her undergraduate and postgraduate education already rooted in political science, she was able to approach the optional subject with clarity and depth.

This alignment between academic study and UPSC preparation strengthened her understanding of complex policy issues—an important factor in the examination process.

LIFE BEYOND BOOKS

Despite the demanding nature of UPSC preparation, Simrandeep maintained a balanced routine through hobbies that kept her connected to culture, literature, and physical activity.

Punjabi Poetry

One of her favourite pursuits is reading Punjabi poetry. Punjabi literature carries powerful reflections of culture, identity, and emotion. Through poetry, she found moments of reflection amid the intense preparation cycle.

Giddha Folk Dance

She also enjoys Giddha, the vibrant traditional folk dance of Punjab. Known for its energy and expressive storytelling, Giddha represents the cultural heritage of Punjabi women.

Book Discussions and Reading Culture

Simrandeep is part of the Words and Wisdom Book Club, where she participates in discussions and collective reading sessions. Such platforms often expose readers to diverse ideas, literature, and viewpoints.

Rope Skipping

Among her hobbies is rope skipping, a simple yet effective physical activity that helps maintain fitness and focus.

These hobbies reflect a personality that values intellectual engagement, cultural traditions, and physical well-being.

A JOURNEY THAT INSPIRES RURAL ASPIRANTS

Simrandeep Kaur’s story carries a message for countless young students across villages and small towns.

Coming from a rural background where opportunities often seem distant, she pursued higher education, prepared for a highly competitive examination, and secured a place among the top rank holders in the country.

Her journey illustrates how education, curiosity about governance, and consistent preparation can open doors to national service.

LOOKING AHEAD

With AIR 15 in UPSC CSE 2025, Simrandeep Kaur now moves closer to joining India’s administrative framework.

For someone who grew up observing rural life closely, the civil services present an opportunity to engage directly with issues such as development, governance, and community welfare.

Her journey—from a village in Punjab to one of the top ranks in the civil services examination—marks the beginning of a new chapter in public service.
