The Department of Personnel and Training of Government of India has allocated services to the candidates who qualified in the Civil Services Examination 2023 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Out of the total of 1016 candidates who qualified, only 883 have been allocated the services as of now, as per the list released by the P&T department. The service allocation list can be seen here below.

This marks the first iteration of service allocation, which determines the posting of candidates to various prestigious services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), as well as Central Civil Services Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’.

WHO GOT WHAT

Predictably, as per the last few years’ trends, this year too, as many as 19 out of the top 20 were allocated IAS. Only, Wardah Khan, AIR 18 in UPSC CSE-2023, opted for IFS and became no 1 in the IFS list.

As expected, Aditya Srivastava, AIR 1, opted for IAS. The top 17 in UPSC CSE 2023 chose IAS. While Eshani Anand, AIR 79 in CSE – 2023, got IPS and became the first one in IPS list. She is of general category.

Manya Chauhan, AIR 84, got IRS and became first in the list. She is from general category.

As per the list, 178 have been allocated IAS, 200 IPS, 291 IRS, 36 IFS, 19 IA&AS, 9 ICAS, 12 IDES, 5 IPOS, 2 DANIPS, 19 IDAS, 4 ITS, 10 DANICS, 1 PONDICS and 4 ICLS.

CATEGORY WISE SERVICE ALLOCATION

In the general category, up to AIR 78 have been allocated IAS, while in OBC category, up to Rank 435 was allocated IAS. In SC category, up to rank 567 and in ST category, up to rank 625 got IAS.

In the Physically Handicapped (PH) category, AIR 1016 Mahesh Kumar (OBC) has been allocated to the IAS. He has muscular dystrophy.

INDIAN FOREIGN SERVICES

Once one of the most sought-after services, the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) saw only 1 out of the top 20 candidates opting for it this year. In contrast, last year, 3 of the top 20 candidates chose the IFS, and the year before that, none of the top 20 candidates opted for it.

HOW SERVICES ARE ALLOCATED

While allocating services to any category, many factors are taken into consideration. They are:

The rank of the candidate in the CSE.
Candidate’s order of preference for service.
Candidate’s category like General, OBC, SC, ST, etc.
Availability of vacancy in the candidate’s category.
Findings of the Medical Board/Appellate Board with respect to the candidate.

If a candidate does not give preferences for all the civil services, and he/she doesn’t get the services for which he/she had given preferences, then he/she will be considered for the remaining services where there are vacancies after the allocation to all the candidates, who could be allocated to cadres according to their preferences.
