Why Has the DGCA Fined Air India Rs 5 Crore Since Privatisation?

AI171 crash has opened the proverbial Pandora’s Box for Air India, once the national carrier of India. While the Government is still undecided whether to send the black boxes abroad for analysis, fingers are being raised at it over the inordinate delay in putting out the reasons for the crash.

The Indian Civil Aviation industry never faced a deeper crisis. After the London-bound AI171 Boeing Dreamliner crashed in Ahmedabad, killing 280 persons, Air India flights are facing safety audits and being diverted and grounded on a daily basis due to one reason or another. The ill-fated flight’s black boxes containing the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and Cockpit Data Recorder (CDR) have not been decoded even after two weeks. Former Director of Flight Safety and Training with Air India, Captain Surjeet Singh Panesar, spoke to Indian Masterminds on all these issues and much more.

Captain Panesar is a very knowledgeable person. He joined Air India in 1964 when the national carrier used to fly only Dacotas and Fokker Friendships. Along with Air India, he too graduated to Boeings and other modern aircraft. He later went on deputation for three years to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the regulatory body controlling flight safety, training and airworthiness of both pilots and aircraft.

Earlier this week, we spoke to Mr Inderjeet Singh, Flight Maintenance Engineer with Air India, on why AI171 crashed. The video can be assessed by clicking on the following link…
