As India celebrates the special bond between a brother and a sister on Bhai Dooj, let us take a look at those siblings who have joined civil services to serve the country. Their love for the nation far surpasses the love they feel for each other. Just as a brother and sister consider it their duty to protect each other, the siblings in civil services take it as their supreme duty to dedicate their lives in the service of the nation.
Bhai Dooj is celebrated in the month of Kartik (Hindu Calendar). Many mythological and historical tales are associated with this festival. However, it present times, this festival is not just limited to a brother-sister relationship, just like Rakshabandhan. It has become a festival that celebrates the love and bonding between all siblings. On this special day, we present few exceptional siblings who have joined civil services and are serving the country.
ARNAV AND ARUSHI MISHRA
From Rae Baraeli in UP, siblings Arnav Mishra and Arushi Mishra had not just cracked UPSC CSE but PCS too. IFS officer Arushi Mishra secured second rank in the Indian Forest Service Examination (IFoS) of the UPSC exam in 2018. Earlier in the UPSC exam, she was allotted the post of IRS after securing 229th rank. She had also secured 16th rank in the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission Examination (UPPCS Exam) and got the post of DSP.
Following in her footsteps, her brother Arnav Mishra cleared UPSC CSE in 2021, entering his name in the reserve list with AIR 42. In the same year, he cleared the state UPPSC with rank 16. Since, he got DANIPS through UPSC CSE so chose to be an SDM. Though he didn’t give up his dream to be an IAS. While continuing his training, he again appeared in UPSC CSE 2022. This time he was selected after bagging AIR 56 and got IAS.
Arnav Mishra completed his schooling from his home town only and, thereafter, prepared for IIT-JEE. He completed his four years of B.Tech from IIT Jodhpur and worked for nearly a year in Bangalore before starting the CSE preparation. Whereas, Arushi graduated with a B.Tech degree from IIT Roorkee in the year 2014, and then started preparing for the UPSC exam.
SIMRAN AND SHRISTI
Sisters Simran and Srishti passed the UPSC 2020 exam together securing AIR 474 and AIR 373 respectively. Daughters of Neeraj Kumar, a property dealer, both the sisters prefer to write their first names only. Their father was the guiding force behind their success.
When Simran was in the 10th standard, her father had made up his mind that she will study humanities and become an IAS officer. However, Simran took up science because she loved it. Nevertheless, she still fulfilled her father’s UPSC dream. And not just Simran, even Srishti followed suit.
They both started the preparation during the worst days of the pandemic. They studied together and also motivated each other.
JAGAT SAI AND VASANTH KUMAR
These two brothers from West Godavari district in Rallapalli, Andhra Pradesh, Jagat Sai and Vasanth Kumar, cleared UPSC CSE 2020. Jagat Sai, the elder brother, secured 32nd rank in his fifth attempt while his younger brother Vasanth Kumar got 170th rank in his second attempt. Both the brothers are engineering graduates.
While Sai could not clear the prelims in his first attempt, in his second attempt, he reached till the interview but could not clear it. He was again left out from the final list in his fourth attempt. Finally, in the fifth attempt, he made it through. His experiences and success after struggle became a guiding force for his younger brother who also followed in his footsteps and joined civil service.
PANKAJ AND AMIT KUMAWAT
Battling all odds, the two sons of a tailor from Rajasthan, Pankaj Kumawat and Amit Kumawat cleared UPSC CSE 2010. Both are graduates from IIT Delhi. In their case, it was the younger brother Amit who motivated his elder brother Pankaj to attempt the UPSC examination. Acting on his advice, Pankaj left his corporate career to prepare for UPSC CSE.
Both did not take any coaching and cleared UPSC CSE 2018 with Pankaj securing AIR 443 and Amit securing AIR 600. They both gave another attempt the next year, and this time they both got selected in IPS.
ANJALI AND ANAMIKA MEENA
Continuing their father Ramesh Chand Meena’s legacy, Anjali and Anamika cleared the prestigious UPSC exam in 2020. Both sisters graduated as electrical engineers before securing admission in IIM Ahmedabad. While Anamika completed her MBA in 2014, Anjali cleared UPSC CSE while doing her MBA. While Anamika got AIR 116, Anjali secured 494.
These were a few siblings in civil services. There are many others like the Dabi sisters (Ria and Tina), the Mishra siblings (Yogesh, Lokesh, Kshama and Madhavi), the Bandhu sisters (Jyotsana and Neha), and the Jain Sisters (Ankita and Vaishali), whose success stories are equally inspiring.
