In the quiet lanes of Kanpur, where aspirations often clash with reality, a young boy dared to dream beyond the ordinary. Divyansh Shukla’s journey to cracking the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2021 is not just a tale of hard work but of unwavering determination, and an unbreakable spirit. Facing personal struggles, societal expectations, and the immense challenge of one of India’s toughest exams, he transformed his setbacks into stepping stones towards success. Now Mr. Shukla is an IPS officer serving in Jharkhand cadre.

THE SPARK

Born and raised in a modest household of Gopalganj, Bihar, Mr. Shukla always harboured a deep sense of responsibility toward society. “I wanted to serve the nation, to be in a position where I could bring about meaningful change,” he said on a media platform.  With this conviction, he set his sights on become a civil servant from an early age.

However, the road was anything but smooth. His first attempt at the UPSC Civil Services Examination ended in failure. The second attempt also didn’t yield the desired result. But rather than letting setbacks define him, Divyansh used each failure as a stepping stone toward success.

FIGHTING BATTLES WITHING AND OUTSIDE

The UPSC examination is known for its unpredictability, vast syllabus, and ruthless competition. While Divyansh was academically strong, he struggled with time management and answer-writing skills in the beginning. He realized that hard work alone wouldn’t be enough; he needed a well-structured strategy.

He spent months analyzing his mistakes and refining his approach. “I stopped treating UPSC like just another exam. It is a test of patience, perseverance, and adaptability. Once I started seeing it that way, my preparation became more focused,” he shares.

His breakthrough came when he changed his study pattern. Instead of rote learning, he started focusing on conceptual clarity, integrating current affairs with static subjects, and practicing answer-writing rigorously. He dedicated fixed hours to revision, mock tests, and self-evaluation, ensuring he was improving with every passing day.

LEARNING FROM FAILURES

Divyansh followed a disciplined routine that played a crucial role in his success. He adopted a smart study plan by breaking subjects into micro-topics and studying them in cycles, ensuring a structured approach to learning. Consistent revision was another key strategy—he created weekly and monthly revision schedules to reinforce retention. Mock tests became a game-changer for him, allowing him to identify weak areas, improve accuracy, and enhance time management. Instead of changing his optional subject after an unsuccessful attempt, he decided to refine his understanding and approach, mastering it over time. For the interview stage, he focused on personality development, actively engaging in group discussions and practicing mock interviews with mentors, which helped him build confidence and articulate his thoughts effectively.

THE FINAL LAP

When the UPSC results were announced, Divyansh couldn’t believe his ears. He had not only cleared the exam but had secured a rank that got him into the prestigious Indian Police Service. The years of relentless hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifices had finally paid off.

“I always believed that perseverance beats talent. If you refuse to give up, no obstacle is big enough,” he says with a victorious smile.

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR ASPIRANTS

Divyansh’s journey offers invaluable lessons to every UPSC aspirant:

  1. Failures Are Not the End: Every failure is an opportunity to analyze, learn, and improve.
  2. Discipline Over Motivation: Motivation fades, but discipline ensures consistency.
  3. Customizing Strategies: One-size-fits-all does not work for UPSC; tailor your preparation based on strengths and weaknesses.
  4. Mental Strength Matters: UPSC is not just an intellectual test but also a psychological battle. Stay mentally resilient.

Divyansh Shukla story is not just about achieving a dream but about embodying the spirit of resilience. Today, as he steps into the field to serve the nation, he carries with him the lessons of his struggles, ready to make a difference. His story is an inspiration to all those who dare to dream big and refuse to give up.As he rightly puts it, “Success in UPSC is not about intelligence alone; it’s about grit, patience, and the willingness to rise every time you fall.”
