Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has announced the appointment of Mr. Abhay Bakre as Part-Time Director (Government Nominee) on its Board. His appointment, approved by the Ministry of Power via an order dated April 11, 2025, came into effect on April 12, 2025.

Mr. Bakre currently serves as the Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). His tenure as Director on the Board will continue until his superannuation, or until further orders or a new appointment is made, whichever occurs earlier. The Board of Directors of POWERGRID approved the appointment through a circular resolution in accordance with Section 161(3) of the Companies Act, 2013.
With a professional background spanning over 35 years, Mr. Bakre brings extensive experience in sectors such as transport, power distribution, electrical construction, petroleum conservation, and clean energy. He is an alumnus of Devi Ahilya University, Indore, with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and holds a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He is also a certified Energy Manager by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
Mr. Bakre began his career in 1988 with the Indian Railways Electrical Engineering Services and has held several significant roles, including leadership positions in the Delhi Metro and Kolkata Metro extension projects. He has also served as Joint Development Commissioner in the Ministry of MSME and as Executive Director at the Petroleum Conservation Research Association under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.
Notably, Mr. Bakre served as Director General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, where he was instrumental in shaping India’s energy efficiency and climate policy frameworks, including the Indian Carbon Market Framework. He represented India in several international forums such as the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and G-20 Energy Ministerial meetings from 2018 to 2023, and played a key role as India’s negotiator at the COP26 Summit held in Glasgow in 2021.
POWERGRID has clarified that Mr. Bakre is not related to any of the company’s directors or key managerial personnel and has not been debarred from holding the office of director by any regulatory authority. His appointment has been officially notified to the stock exchanges in compliance with SEBI regulations.
