Ranchi: Jharkhand’s young chess prodigy Adhiraj Mitra has brought pride to the state and the nation by winning the gold medal in the Under-14 category at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025. Following this remarkable achievement, Adhiraj met Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand, at the Chief Minister’s Residential Office on Kanke Road on Saturday (February 28), where he shared his international tournament experience.
Gold Medal Glory in Under-14 Category
The Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025 was held in Malaysia from November 7 to 16, featuring some of the strongest young players from across Commonwealth nations. Competing in the highly competitive Under-14 category, Adhiraj displayed exceptional strategic thinking, patience, and composure under pressure.
Facing tough opponents round after round, the young chess star maintained consistency and focus, ultimately securing the gold medal. His victory not only highlights his personal dedication but also showcases the growing strength of Indian chess at the grassroots level.
During his meeting with the Chief Minister, Adhiraj described the win as “extremely special,” emphasizing how meaningful it was to represent India on an international stage and return home with the top honor.

Who is Adhiraj Mitra?
Adhiraj Mitra is a Class VIII student at Loyola School in Jamshedpur. Despite his young age, he has already built an impressive track record in chess.
He has been actively participating in state and national-level tournaments for several years, earning multiple medals and accolades. Known for his sharp technical skills and well-planned strategies, Adhiraj regularly competes in rated tournaments to sharpen his game and gain international exposure.
He credited his success to the constant support of his family and the guidance of his coach, Abhishek Das, under whose mentorship he continues to refine his skills and competitive approach.
Meeting with Chief Minister Hemant Soren
After his historic win, Adhiraj paid a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Hemant Soren at the official residence in Ranchi. The Chief Minister congratulated the young champion and praised his dedication and determination.
Hemant Soren stated that Jharkhand’s athletes possess immense talent and are consistently bringing glory to the state. He extended his best wishes to Adhiraj for a bright future and assured full support from the state government in his sporting journey.
