Centre Approves Extension of Senior Bureaucrat’s Deputation in Key Role
Indian Masterminds Stories

Lucknow: In a major bureaucratic development, the deputation tenure of Amit Singh, a 2000-batch officer of the Indian Railway Stores Service (IRSS), has been extended till March 31, 2027. Singh currently serves as the Secretary to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a key post he has held for several years.

The extension was formally approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following a proposal from the Ministry of Railways. The order was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Notably, this extension has been granted in relaxation of the normal deputation policy, underlining the importance and continuity of Singh’s role in the Chief Minister’s core administrative team.

A Trusted Officer in the CMO

Amit Singh was deputed to the Uttar Pradesh government in April 2017, when he joined the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) as Special Secretary. Recognized for his administrative acumen and discreet efficiency, he was later elevated to the post of Secretary to the Chief Minister. Over the years, he has become one of the most trusted aides in CM Yogi Adityanath’s inner circle.

His extended tenure reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership and the strategic role he plays in managing the CM’s office during crucial administrative and political periods.

Rich Administrative Background

Before his assignment in the Uttar Pradesh CMO, Amit Singh held a series of significant positions in both the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Railways, including:

  • Regional Passport Officer, Lucknow – Ministry of External Affairs
  • Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) – Indian Railways
  • Secretary to the General Manager, North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur

His career reflects a consistent track record of delivering results in diverse and high-responsibility roles.

Strategic Importance of the Extension

The extension comes as Uttar Pradesh gears up for key political milestones, including the 2027 Assembly elections.

Amit Singh’s continued presence in the CMO ensures institutional stability, operational continuity, and trusted coordination in a politically sensitive governance environment.

The decision also reinforces CM Yogi Adityanath’s approach of relying on a core group of seasoned and loyal officers to manage the state’s complex administrative machinery.
