Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has flagged off 26 District Mobile Forensic Vehicles (MFVs) in Mangalagiri to strengthen scientific investigation and enable faster collection and preservation of evidence at crime scenes.

The vehicles form the second tier of Andhra Pradesh’s three-tier, 24×7 forensic evidence collection system, developed through the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL).

26 Vehicles to Provide District-Level Forensic Support

The newly launched MFVs will provide forensic assistance in cases involving offences punishable with seven years or more of imprisonment.

The three-tier system comprises:

  • Tier 1: 107 existing Crime Spot Vehicles operating at the SDPO level for offences punishable with less than seven years.
  • Tier 2: 26 district-level Mobile Forensic Vehicles for more serious offences.
  • Tier 3: Specialised teams from APFSL and its seven Regional Forensic Science Laboratories for sensitive and complex cases.

The system is also linked to the forensic examination requirements under Section 176(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for serious offences.

MFVs Equipped With Specialised Forensic Kits

The vehicles have been equipped to assist forensic personnel and investigating officers in processing crime scenes and handling physical evidence.

Key equipment includes:

  • Bloodstain detection kits
  • Gunshot residue kits
  • NDPS investigation kits
  • Fire and arson investigation kits
  • Fingerprint development kits
  • Advanced forensic light sources
  • Cyber-forensic equipment

The units will support crime-scene examination, photography and documentation, identification and collection of evidence, as well as its preservation, packing and labelling.

APFSL Examined 23,682 Cases in 2025

The initiative comes as Andhra Pradesh strengthens its forensic infrastructure and response capabilities.

According to figures cited by the police, APFSL and its seven Regional Forensic Science Laboratories received 25,602 cases in 2025 and examined 23,682, recording a 92.5% disposal rate.

The expanded mobile forensic network is intended to facilitate earlier forensic intervention at crime scenes and strengthen the handling and chain of custody of evidence.

Focus on Scientific Investigation

The launch was held at the 6th APSP Battalion Grounds in Mangalagiri and attended by senior police and forensic officials, including CID chief Ravi Shankar Ayyanar, APSLPRB chairman R.K. Meena, Additional DGP (Law and Order) N. Madhusudhana Reddy and APFSL Director P.H.D. Ramakrishna.

Gupta said, “APFSL, supported by seven Regional Forensic Science Laboratories, recorded a 92.5 per cent disposal rate in 2025, examining 23,682 of 25,602 cases received. Timely forensic aid was essential for reliable evidence collection and strengthening the criminal justice system.”

The deployment of the 26 vehicles expands forensic assistance beyond laboratory facilities and brings specialised evidence-collection capabilities closer to crime scenes across Andhra Pradesh.
