New Delhi: In a breakthrough for military medical care, the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) achieved a major milestone on August 28, 2025. The hospital became the first government institute in India and the second in South Asia to perform Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery using the advanced ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System.
Entry into Frontier Robotic Eye Surgery
The Ophthalmology Department at AHRR successfully performed its first Femto-second Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS). The procedure was conducted by Brigadier SK Mishra on a 61-year-old patient. Unlike conventional surgery, FLACS automates critical steps such as corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and cataract fragmentation. With femtosecond laser precision at the micron level, the technology ensures enhanced safety and surgical accuracy.
Advancing Military Medicine with Cutting-Edge Technology
The integration of FLACS highlights AHRR’s commitment to adopting the latest medical innovations. By introducing robotic, bladeless, and computer-guided eye surgery, the hospital is setting new standards in patient care. Precision and consistency offered by this technology guarantee superior outcomes, especially vital for military personnel and their families.
Leadership and Commitment to Clinical Excellence
The achievement aligns with the guidance of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin. With this milestone, AHRR’s Ophthalmology Department continues to expand its legacy of clinical excellence and innovation in military healthcare.
