New Delhi: The Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, outlined India’s strategic priorities for Artificial Intelligence in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MET) sector at a high-level convening of global academicians, industry leaders, policymakers and technology experts.
The event, held during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, marked the launch of the White Paper Concept on “AI for Manufacturing Engineering Technology (AI-MET),” aimed at enabling responsible, scalable and inclusive AI adoption across India’s industrial ecosystem.
Strategic Convening of Industry and Academia
Curated by NAMTECH under the leadership of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, the convening brought together representatives from top global and Indian institutions.
Academicians from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Technology Madras, alongside leaders from Microsoft India, Dell Technologies, Cisco India, Hitachi India, Tata Electronics, Rockwell Automation, Palo Alto Networks, PayPal, and Intel participated in the dialogue.
The discussion positioned AI as a foundational enabler of productivity, competitiveness and innovation across India’s industrial sectors, aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
AI-MET White Paper: A Strategic Framework
The White Paper Concept on “AI for Manufacturing Engineering Technology (AI-MET)” outlines a structured roadmap to embed AI across manufacturing value chains. It proposes coordinated pathways for collaboration between industry, academia and policymakers to drive productivity, sustainability and global competitiveness.
The initiative builds on the Industry-Academia Roundtable held in May 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, where stakeholders emphasized collective action to accelerate India’s industrial transformation.
The proposed MET Platform, catalysed by NAMTECH, aims to establish a shared governance and execution model to place manufacturing at the centre of India’s growth and decarbonization agenda.
Minister’s Vision: Inclusive and Scalable AI
Addressing the gathering, Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that Artificial Intelligence is a foundational pillar in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation. He emphasized the need to:
- Enhance productivity and competitiveness through AI integration
- Empower enterprises and MSMEs
- Prepare India’s workforce for future-ready roles
- Develop advanced talent to position India as a global manufacturer of precision equipment
He urged NAMTECH to leverage the initiative to develop next-generation talent capable of strengthening India’s manufacturing leadership.
Global Academic Perspective
Eric Grimson, Chancellor for Academic Advancement at MIT, highlighted that India’s next phase of AI growth would depend on moving from capability to application. He stressed the importance of embedding AI across enterprises and MSMEs, investing in large-scale skill development, and sustaining collaboration among academia, industry and government.
Industry Voices: Deployment, Skills and Security
Industry leaders underscored that the real impact of AI would be determined by its deployment at the shop-floor level and within complex engineering systems.
Executives from Microsoft, Cisco, Rockwell Automation and Palo Alto Networks emphasized:
- Enabling MSME adoption of AI
- Strengthening workforce skilling and upskilling
- Integrating AI into industrial automation systems
- Ensuring cybersecurity and secure Operational Technology (OT) networks
- Bridging the education-industry gap for day-zero workforce readiness
Dr. Ibrahim Hafeezur Rehman, CEO of NAMTECH, noted that grounding education in real-world industrial contexts can enable immediate deployment of skilled talent into production environments.
Towards a Collaborative AI Manufacturing Ecosystem
The convening marked a significant step toward institutionalizing a collaborative framework for AI adoption in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. By integrating research, industrial application, skills development and policy support, the AI-MET initiative seeks to transform India’s manufacturing sector into a globally competitive, innovation-driven ecosystem.
