New Delhi: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with the Ministry of Defence for the supply of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The contract was signed on September 23, 2026, in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The procurement has been undertaken under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category and is aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities while advancing the country’s defence indigenisation efforts.
BDL to Supply 160 SAT-SAAW Systems to Indian Air Force
Under the contract, BDL will supply 160 SAT-SAAW weapons along with associated equipment to the Indian Air Force.
The contract is a domestic order and is not classified as a related-party transaction.

What Is SAT-SAAW?
Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAT-SAAW) is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide weapon designed to engage targets associated with enemy airfield infrastructure from a stand-off range.
The system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO. It can be launched from aircraft platforms including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI.
The weapon is intended to enhance the ability of aircraft to engage critical airfield-related targets while operating from a stand-off distance.
60% Indigenous Content Under Buy-Indian Category
The SAT-SAAW contract has been placed under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) procurement category.
The system will have an indigenous content of 60%, with further efforts aimed at increasing domestic development of important subsystems.
The subsystems identified for further indigenisation include:
- Initial Measurement Unit
- Long Impact Delay Fuse
- Twin Store Carrier
The increased indigenous content is expected to support the government’s broader Aatmanirbharta in Defence initiative and strengthen domestic capabilities in the design and production of advanced weapon systems.
Delivery Scheduled From 2027-28
According to the Ministry of Defence, deliveries under the contract are scheduled to take place during 2027-28 and 2028-29.
The procurement is expected to add to the Indian Air Force’s precision strike capabilities and contribute to overall defence preparedness.
The contract also provides BDL with a major domestic defence order as the company continues to expand its role in the production and supply of indigenously developed weapon systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
SAT-SAAW to Strengthen IAF Operational Capabilities
SAT-SAAW is designed for use against airfield-related infrastructure and other designated targets. Such systems can contribute to efforts aimed at disrupting critical infrastructure during military operations.
The Ministry of Defence said the induction of SAT-SAAW is expected to enhance the operational capability of the Indian Air Force and strengthen the country’s defence preparedness.
The weapon’s precision-guided design and stand-off capability are intended to allow compatible aircraft to engage designated targets without necessarily approaching them at close range.
Contract Supports Aatmanirbharta in Defence
The ₹810.79 crore agreement is another step towards increasing the share of indigenous systems in India’s defence procurement.
With SAT-SAAW developed by DRDO and the procurement being carried out under the Buy (Indian – IDDM) category, the contract combines domestic design and development with Indian manufacturing capabilities.
The further indigenisation of key subsystems is also expected to contribute to the development of a broader domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
