Developed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, the train features advanced passenger amenities, Divyangjan-friendly facilities, regenerative braking and modern noise-reduction technology.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: India’s first indigenously manufactured bullet train, designed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, is currently under production at BEML’s Bengaluru facility. The train is being developed with a test speed of 280 km/h, marking a significant step forward in India’s efforts to build indigenous high-speed rail technology.

The train has been designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort, accessibility, safety and operational efficiency. Its features combine modern passenger amenities with advanced engineering and energy-efficient technologies to meet the requirements of high-speed rail operations.

Passenger Comfort and Accessibility Features

The interiors of the indigenous bullet train have been designed by considering Indian anthropometric requirements to ensure passenger comfort during high-speed journeys.

Key passenger-friendly features include:

  • Ergonomically designed seats: Seats with adequate legroom to provide a comfortable travel experience.
  • Level boarding: Retractable footsteps to support convenient boarding and alighting.
  • Divyangjan-friendly facilities: Dedicated seating arrangements and accessible toilets for passengers with disabilities.
  • Modern lighting and luggage facilities: LED lighting, overhead baggage racks and additional floor-mounted luggage stands.
  • Power outlets: Charging facilities for passengers’ electronic devices.
  • Bio-digester toilets: Modern bio-digester toilet systems.
  • Wide windows and gangways: Wide windows and sealed, single-piece gangways designed to enhance the passenger experience.

Advanced Passenger Information and Entertainment Systems

The train will feature a comprehensive passenger information system to keep travellers informed throughout their journey.

LCD displays will provide information in English, Hindi and regional languages. The system will also include audio announcements, emergency talk-back units and a Wi-Fi-based infotainment system.

These facilities are intended to improve communication, accessibility and convenience for passengers.

Advanced Performance and Energy-Efficient Technologies

The indigenous bullet train incorporates several advanced technologies to support high-speed operations, improve energy efficiency and enhance ride comfort.

Its key performance features include:

  • Traction system: The train operates on a 25 kV, 50 Hz single-phase AC traction system.
  • Regenerative braking: The system helps improve energy efficiency by recovering energy during braking.
  • Aerodynamic design: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been used to optimise the train’s aerodynamic design, reduce air resistance, mitigate tunnel pressure waves and improve ride comfort.
  • Noise reduction: Measures such as sound insulation, damping coatings and aerodynamic fairings have been incorporated to minimise noise.

Advanced HVAC System for Passenger Comfort

Each train car is equipped with two Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units. These systems are designed to maintain comfortable temperature and humidity levels throughout the journey, supporting a pleasant travel environment for passengers.

A Major Step Towards Indigenous High-Speed Rail Technology

The development of India’s first indigenously manufactured bullet train represents an important milestone in the country’s high-speed rail journey. With a combination of advanced engineering, energy-efficient systems and passenger-centric features, the train is being developed to strengthen domestic capabilities in high-speed rail technology.

Its focus on safety, accessibility and passenger experience also reflects the importance of developing modern rail infrastructure suited to India’s requirements.
