Mumbai: In a significant move towards modernizing India’s port logistics and freight operations, BEML Limited, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and Umeandus Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. (UTIPL) have entered into a strategic collaboration to develop the Enhanced Freight Transport System (e-FTS) — a rail-based, automated solution aimed at transforming cargo handling across Indian ports.
The quadrapartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally exchanged during India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, in the presence of Mr. P.K. Roy, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Mr. Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, along with senior officials and delegates from all four partner organizations. Mr. B N Jagadish, Head Micro SBU (Maritime), and Captain Vishal Agarwal (Retd), Head – Business Development – Maritime, represented BEML in the MoU exchange ceremony.
Revolutionizing Port Logistics with e-FTS
The Enhanced Freight Transport System is envisioned as a fully automated, rail-based cargo transport network designed to improve efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and optimize freight movement at Indian ports. Leveraging decades of expertise in rail and metro systems, BEML will develop and supply driverless electric pods — autonomous rolling stock capable of transporting bulk and containerized cargo along dedicated guideways designed specifically for the e-FTS ecosystem.
The initiative will integrate cutting-edge digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced IT systems for smart signalling, control, and monitoring. By combining automation, digitalization, and sustainability, the e-FTS aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and support India’s goal of creating smarter, faster, and greener port infrastructure.

Partnership Highlights
This collaboration underscores India’s growing focus on digital transformation, automation, and sustainable logistics. While BEML focuses on the design and manufacture of autonomous rolling stock, DPA will provide critical port infrastructure support, DMRC will lend its expertise in rail operations and safety protocols, and UTIPL will contribute advanced technology solutions for intelligent monitoring and control systems.
The project is expected to set a new benchmark for port logistics in India, demonstrating how collaboration between public and private sector entities can accelerate the modernization of critical infrastructure while promoting efficiency and sustainability.
