India’s Next-Gen Driverless Metro: BEML Rolls Out Prototype for BMRCL Phase-2

The newly unveiled prototype is part of a ₹3,177-crore contract under which BEML will supply 318 Standard Gauge metro cars for the Blue Line (Airport Line) and Pink Line corridors.

Bengaluru: BEML Limited, a leading multi-technology Schedule A company under the Ministry of Defence, today rolled out the prototype of its state-of-the-art Driverless Metro Trainset (5RS-DM) for the upcoming corridors of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Phase 2, 2A, and 2B. The rollout ceremony took place at BEML Rail Complex in Bengaluru, with Dr. J. Ravishankar, IAS, MD, BMRCL, and Mr. Shantanu Roy, CMD, BEML Ltd, in attendance, along with senior leadership from both organisations.

Milestone Achievement for Bengaluru Metro

The newly unveiled prototype is part of a ₹3,177-crore contract under which BEML will supply 318 Standard Gauge metro cars for the Blue Line (Airport Line) and Pink Line corridors. Following the prototype rollout, the trainsets will undergo a detailed testing and commissioning programme in line with BMRCL’s implementation timeline. BEML will also provide comprehensive maintenance support for up to 15 years, marking a significant step toward enhancing Bengaluru’s urban transit infrastructure.

Advanced Features of the Driverless Trainset

The prototype demonstrates BEML’s capability in delivering cutting-edge, self-reliant mobility solutions. Key features include –

  • Modern interiors designed for enhanced passenger comfort
  • Energy-efficient systems with upgraded passenger information tools
  • Extra-wide gangways for seamless movement between coaches
  • USB charging ports, ergonomic seating, and improved accessibility
  • Compliance with advanced fire safety, crashworthiness, and international safety standards
  • Compatibility with CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) for fully driverless operations

These features aim to offer commuters a safer, more comfortable, and efficient travel experience while supporting the city’s sustainability goals.

Dr. J. Ravishankar, IAS, MD, BMRCL, added, “The rollout of this prototype demonstrates BEML’s commitment to supplying state-of-the-art trainsets that will enhance the commuting experience. This milestone is crucial for the R6 Line and ORR Airport Line, reducing traffic congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and improving Bengaluru’s quality of life.”

BEML Strengthens Its Role in Bengaluru Metro Expansion

Recently, BEML secured additional orders worth ₹414 crore and ₹405 crore for Phase 2 of the Bengaluru Metro, increasing the total supply from 53 trainsets (318 cars) to 66 trainsets (396 cars). This reinforces BEML’s position as the largest rolling stock supplier to Bengaluru Metro, building on its prior supply to the Green and Purple lines.
