Bengaluru: BEML Limited has entered into a strategic tripartite research collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID)—IISc’s innovation and incubation arm—to advance blue-sky, applied, and translational research across emerging engineering and technology domains.
The collaboration aims to accelerate next-generation technology development in critical sectors including aerospace and defence, rail and metro systems, mining and construction equipment, maritime technologies, next-generation mobility, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing.
Tripartite Master Research Agreement Formalized
The partnership has been formalized through a Tripartite Master Research Agreement (MRA), establishing a structured framework for:
- Joint research execution
- Access to advanced research infrastructure
- Operational and technical alignment across institutions
The MRA was signed at the IISc campus in the presence of Mr. Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director of BEML, Professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc, and Professor B. Gurumoorthy, Director, FSID, along with senior leadership from all three institutions.

Leadership Highlights Strategic Importance
Mr. Shantanu Roy stated,
“This strategic partnership with IISc and FSID represents a significant milestone in BEML’s evolution as a future-ready, innovation-led engineering enterprise. By integrating academic excellence, advanced research, and industrial engineering capabilities, we aim to accelerate the development of critical technologies across defence, mobility, infrastructure, and green manufacturing.”
Professor B. Gurumoorthy, Director of FSID, added,
“This collaboration strengthens the industry–academia–innovation ecosystem. Combining BEML’s Central Research Facility, IISc’s scientific expertise, and FSID’s innovation and execution capabilities, we aim to accelerate the journey from advanced research to real-world technologies, building India’s self-reliance in strategic sectors.”
Central Research Facility to Anchor Innovation
The research initiatives will be anchored through BEML’s newly established Central Research Facility (CRF), designed as a centre of excellence for advanced research, proof-of-concept development, and technology validation.
The framework allows:
- Joint knowledge creation and collaborative technology development
- Simulation, modeling, and prototype testing
- Validation of critical technologies and generation of intellectual property
BEML has committed significant R&D investments to sustain the collaborative research programs, ensuring alignment with global best practices in research governance and statutory R&D requirements.

Focus on Applied and Translational Research
Under this partnership, the institutions will jointly undertake:
- Exploratory and applied research in emerging engineering technologies
- Simulation, modeling, and prototype development
- Validation of technologies for real-world application
- Generation of intellectual property supporting industrial competitiveness and national self-reliance
The initiative emphasizes indigenisation, technological leadership, and creation of globally competitive solutions across strategic sectors.
