Mysuru: BEML Limited, a Ministry of Defence public sector undertaking, has marked a major milestone in India’s heavy engineering sector with the unveiling of the country’s first indigenous 35-ton Electric Dump Truck at its Mysuru Complex. The vehicle was formally flagged off by CMD Shantanu Roy in the presence of senior company officials and industry partners.
Major Step Toward Sustainable Mining
The newly developed electric dump truck represents a significant advancement in sustainable mining and infrastructure solutions. Designed and manufactured in India, the vehicle aligns with the country’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments and long-term carbon reduction goals.
With zero tailpipe emissions, the truck is expected to support cleaner and greener mining operations while reducing environmental impact in heavy-duty industrial applications.

Advanced Indigenous Technology and Design
The 35-ton Electric Dump Truck has been engineered for demanding mining environments and is built to global performance and safety standards. Key specifications include:
- Payload capacity: 35 tons
- Gross vehicle weight: approximately 60 tons
- Motor: High-efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)
- Battery: 300 kWh lithium-ion pack
- Energy efficiency: 85–90%
The vehicle is also equipped with a regenerative braking system that recovers energy during downhill operations, improving overall efficiency.
Smart Battery and Safety Systems
To ensure reliability in harsh mining conditions, the truck features an advanced Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) with liquid cooling technology. This helps maintain optimal battery temperature, enhances safety, and extends operational life.
Additionally, the system includes IP67/IP68-rated electrical components and integrated fire protection systems, ensuring high durability and operational safety.

Strong Economic and Operational Benefits
Beyond environmental advantages, the electric dump truck offers significant cost savings for mining operators:
- 60–70% reduction in energy costs
- 40–60% lower overall operating costs
- Reduced maintenance due to fewer mechanical parts
- Estimated payback period of 1–2 years
The company has also developed scalable charging infrastructure capable of charging the battery from 0–80% in just 60–90 minutes, enabling continuous operations.
Leadership View on the Milestone
Speaking at the launch event, BEML CMD Shantanu Roy said the development marks a defining moment in the company’s journey toward sustainable and advanced engineering solutions. He highlighted BEML’s focus on innovation, indigenisation, and environmentally responsible technologies aligned with global standards.
Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision
This innovation strengthens India’s push for self-reliance in advanced mining and construction equipment. It also positions BEML as a key player in the global shift toward green mining technologies and sustainable industrial development.
