BEML Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has achieved a major milestone by securing its first international contract in the Rail and Metro sector. The contract involves the retrofit and reconditioning of a Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) in Malaysia, marking the company’s official entry into the global metro rail market.
The deal, valued at USD 1 million (approximately Rs. 8.758 crore), was formally awarded to BEML on August 9, 2025.
Strategic Move into Global Markets
This development is seen as a significant leap for BEML’s Rail and Metro vertical, which has so far focused on domestic metro manufacturing and railway equipment solutions.
“This contract not only strengthens BEML’s global footprint but also showcases India’s engineering capabilities on the international stage,” said a senior company official.
The contract is expected to open up new avenues for future collaboration in Southeast Asia and other global markets seeking advanced rail technology and refurbishment services.
Boost to ‘Make in India’ and Export Potential
As a key player under the Ministry of Defence, BEML’s success in the international arena aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, particularly in promoting the export of indigenous technology and services.
This contract is likely to serve as a template for similar partnerships in countries with aging metro and rail systems in need of modernisation.
