New Delhi: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a leading Defence PSU, has been awarded a major contract by Indian Railways’ South Western Railway (SWR) for the design, development, supply, installation, trial, and commissioning of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system. The Letter of Intent (LoI) was received by BHEL on 11th September 2025.

Scope of the Project

The project involves the comprehensive deployment of Kavach equipment, both onboard locomotives and at trackside locations, including stations, level crossings (LC), interlocking blocks (IB), and automatic block signaling (ABS) areas. This integrated system is designed to significantly enhance safety and prevent collisions by automating braking and signaling functions.

Manufacturing and Execution Timeline

All Kavach equipment under this order will be manufactured at BHEL’s Bengaluru plant, showcasing the company’s advanced manufacturing capabilities. The contract requires completion of the entire project within 18 months from the date of the Letter of Intent, reflecting a focused timeline for speedy implementation.

Significance of Kavach for Indian Railways

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system that helps prevent accidents caused by human error by automatically controlling train speed and signaling. This order underlines Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to modernize and improve safety infrastructure across its network.

Market Reaction

Following the announcement, shares of BHEL saw a slight dip, trading down by 0.14% at Rs 228.74 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), indicating a steady investor response.

This order from South Western Railway reinforces BHEL’s expanding role in railway safety technology and its contribution to the ‘Make in India’ initiative by manufacturing advanced safety systems domestically. Successful implementation of the Kavach system is expected to improve passenger safety and operational efficiency across the Indian Railways network.
