In a landmark move aimed at improving the education system and acknowledging the contribution of support staff, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a 100% increase in the honorarium for cooks, night watchmen, and physical education and health instructors (PT teachers) working under the state’s education department.

Making the announcement through his official social media handle, Mr. Kumar stated that this decision is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Bihar’s education system since November 2005, when his government first came to power.

Massive Jump in Education Budget

Highlighting the state’s long-term commitment, the Chief Minister noted that Bihar’s education budget has surged from Rs. 4,366 crore in 2005 to Rs. 77,690 crore in 2025, marking a dramatic increase that reflects sustained investments in infrastructure, school buildings, and teacher appointments.

Honorarium Hiked for Key Support Staff

The Chief Minister detailed the revised honorarium structure for different categories of staff:

  • Mid-Day Meal Cooks: Monthly honorarium increased from Rs. 1,650 to Rs. 3,300
  • Night Watchmen (Secondary and Higher Education Schools): Doubled from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000
  • Physical Education & Health Instructors (PT Teachers): Raised from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 16,000, with annual increments increased from Rs. 200 to Rs. 400

Recognition and Morale Boost

Mr. Kumar emphasized that these roles play a critical role in the smooth operation of schools and the well-being of students. By doubling their honorarium, the government aims not only to improve the financial condition of these workers but also to give dignified recognition to their contributions.

“This decision will enhance the morale of these employees and inspire them to work with greater dedication and enthusiasm,” the Chief Minister said.

A Significant Step in Education Reform

The decision is being widely seen as a progressive move in Bihar’s education policy and a direct response to long-standing demands for better compensation. Education experts and support staff across the state have welcomed the announcement, calling it a much-needed reform that acknowledges the importance of auxiliary staff in delivering quality education.

With this announcement, the Bihar government has once again signaled its focus on inclusive development and education-led growth, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening grassroots educational infrastructure and human resources.
