Patna: The Correctional Services wing of Bihar’s Home Department has been honored with the prestigious SCOTCH Award for outstanding work in prison management and inmate rehabilitation. The award recognizes the department’s successful initiatives in providing computer training, promoting digital literacy, and implementing prisoner rehabilitation programs across the state’s jails.

Award Presented at 105th SCOTCH Meeting in New Delhi

The award was announced during the 105th SCOTCH meeting held in New Delhi under the “Governing Developed India” program. The recognition highlights the remarkable efforts of Bihar’s jails in integrating modern technology and skill-building programs for inmates, aimed at preparing them for reintegration into society after their release.

At the ceremony, the award was presented to Pranav Kumar, Home Secretary of Bihar and Inspector General of Correctional Services. Also present were Vinod Kumar Prabhaskar, Prison Welfare Officer, and Jyotsna Singh, Probation Officer, representing the Correctional Services Department.

Focus on Digital Literacy and Rehabilitation

In line with the growing importance of digital skills in society, Bihar’s prisons have established computer labs to train inmates in various computer courses. Through collaborations with NILIT (National Institute of Learning & Information Technology), inmates are provided certifications upon completing these courses.

These initiatives aim to equip prisoners with employable skills that facilitate smoother reintegration into society post-release. By providing digital literacy and vocational training, the department seeks to reduce recidivism and promote the social and economic empowerment of former inmates.

About the Recognition

The SCOTCH Award recognizes excellence in governance, innovative programs, and successful implementation of social and institutional reforms. Bihar’s correctional services have been acknowledged for their proactive approach in modernizing prisons and providing meaningful rehabilitation opportunities for inmates, making them better prepared to contribute positively to society.
