Patna: Bihar has stepped up its digital agriculture drive with a state-wide survey of Kharif 2026 crops across all 38 districts. The Agriculture Department aims to digitally record 2,62,84,716 plots by September 30, with around 41 lakh plots already surveyed.

Mobile-Based Survey for Real-Time Crop Data

The digital crop survey began on August 13 and uses mobile technology to record details of farmland and crops. Field teams are capturing crop information along with geo-tagged photographs, creating a digital record of what is being cultivated on each plot.

Agriculture coordinators, Block Technical Managers, Assistant Technical Managers and Kisan Salahkars are conducting the survey at the field level.

The exercise covers major Kharif crops, including paddy, as well as horticultural crops and crops planted more than a month earlier.

Focus on Accuracy and Transparency

The department has established a monitoring system to maintain the quality of the data collected during the survey.

Officials at the department headquarters have been monitoring the exercise since August 14. Random field visits, along with daily and weekly progress reports, are being used to assess the performance of districts and identify areas requiring attention.

Master trainers were also trained before the survey began to help field teams carry out accurate and timely data collection.

Digital Data to Improve Agricultural Planning

The digital database is expected to give the government a clearer picture of crop coverage across Bihar. Reliable field-level information can support decisions related to crop insurance, agricultural marketing, storage and the implementation of welfare schemes.

The data can also help authorities estimate seasonal and crop-wise acreage, production and productivity more effectively.

For farmers, the system is expected to make crop-related information more accessible. Once the digital records are available, farmers will be able to view the status of their Kharif crops through their mobile phones.

Agriculture Moves Towards a Data-Driven System

Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha described the digital crop survey as an important step towards technological change and greater transparency in the agriculture sector.

He said the survey would help provide farmers with the benefits of departmental schemes in real time. The data generated through the exercise will also support more accurate planning based on crop-wise and season-wise information.

With more than 2.6 crore plots covered under the initiative, Bihar is building a large digital database of its agricultural land and crops. The move can strengthen evidence-based decision-making while improving the delivery of government support to farmers.

The initiative marks a significant shift towards a more data-driven, transparent and technology-enabled agricultural system, with the potential to improve planning, monitoring and service delivery across the state.
