Patna: The Bihar government is stepping up efforts to promote eco-tourism and develop natural destinations as major tourist attractions. As part of this initiative, Kukurjhap Dam in the Barhat block of Jamui district is set to be developed as a modern eco-tourism hub, with proposed facilities including ziplining, cycling, adventure activities and modern cottages.

According to information from the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, the proposed project aims to enhance tourism infrastructure while preserving the area’s natural beauty and ecological balance. The initiative is expected to attract more visitors to Jamui and create new employment and self-employment opportunities for local residents.

Kukurjhap Dam to Get Ziplining, Cycling and Adventure Activities

Kukurjhap Dam and its surrounding areas are known for their natural beauty, including forests, hills and a scenic reservoir. The proposed development plan seeks to make the destination more attractive to tourists by introducing modern recreational and adventure-based facilities.

Under the plan, facilities for activities such as ziplining and cycling are proposed, along with other adventure tourism options. Modern cottages are also planned to provide accommodation for visitors who wish to spend more time in the natural surroundings.

The project is expected to improve the area’s tourism potential by combining outdoor recreation with nature-based experiences.

Eco-Tourism Project to Be Developed Under PPP Model

The proposed development of Kukurjhap Dam is planned under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Bihar State Eco-Tourism Development Society is overseeing efforts to take the project forward.

The initiative focuses on developing tourism infrastructure while maintaining a balance between environmental conservation and visitor facilities. The proposed approach aims to make the destination more accessible and attractive without compromising its natural surroundings.

The development is part of Bihar’s broader efforts to promote eco-tourism and utilise the state’s natural resources for sustainable tourism.

Kukurjhap Dam Project Expected to Create Local Employment Opportunities

The development of Kukurjhap Dam as an eco-tourism hub is expected to support the local economy by generating employment and self-employment opportunities for residents of Jamui district.

As tourism activities expand, local people could find opportunities in several sectors, including:

  • Tourist guiding: Providing information and guidance to visitors.
  • Food and hospitality: Operating food outlets and related services.
  • Transport services: Supporting tourist movement to and from the destination.
  • Cottage management: Managing accommodation and visitor facilities.
  • Adventure tourism: Participating in the operation and management of recreational activities.

Greater participation by local youth and rural communities could help ensure that the economic benefits of tourism reach the surrounding areas.

Bhathakol Water Source in Chormara Also Planned for Tourism Development

Alongside Kukurjhap Dam, efforts are also underway to develop the Bhathakol water source in Chormara, Jamui district, as a tourist destination.

The natural water source and surrounding forest area offer potential for nature-based tourism. Developing both locations could expand Jamui’s eco-tourism offerings and encourage visitors to explore more of the district’s natural attractions.

The proposed initiatives are aimed at building a broader tourism network around the district’s natural landscapes and resources.

Eco-Tourism Could Give Kukurjhap Dam a New Identity

Kukurjhap Dam has historically remained in the spotlight due to Maoist activities in the region. The proposed eco-tourism project seeks to create new opportunities by highlighting the area’s natural assets and tourism potential.

If implemented, the plan could establish Kukurjhap Dam as a destination for nature lovers and visitors interested in outdoor and adventure activities. The addition of accommodation and recreational facilities could also encourage longer stays.

By combining tourism development, environmental conservation and local employment generation, the initiative could help give Kukurjhap Dam a new identity on Bihar’s eco-tourism map.

However, the facilities mentioned are part of the proposed development plan; their implementation and operational timelines have not been specified in the information provided.
