Patna: In a landmark development for Bihar’s transport infrastructure, the Patna–Purnia Expressway (NE-9) has received a major financial approval from the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC) under the Union Finance Ministry. The project has now been forwarded for final clearance by the Union Cabinet.
This will be Bihar’s first fully internal expressway, developed entirely within the state boundaries, marking a significant milestone in its road connectivity history.
Travel Time Reduced from Hours to Just 3 Hours
Once completed, the expressway will drastically reduce travel time between Patna and Purnia. At present, the journey takes several hours due to congested and uneven road conditions. The new expressway will cut this down to approximately 3 hours, significantly improving mobility across the state.
The project is designed for a 120 kmph speed limit, ensuring faster, smoother, and safer travel.
Game-Changer for Bihar’s Development
Officials and experts consider the project a “game changer” for Bihar, particularly for the underdeveloped Seemanchal region, which has long faced infrastructural and economic challenges.
The expressway is expected to boost:
- Regional connectivity
- Industrial growth
- Agricultural trade
- Tourism development
- Employment opportunities
It is not just a road project but a major step toward economic transformation in the state.
Future-Ready Design: 4-Lane Now, 6-Lane Expansion Planned
The expressway is being constructed as a 4-lane highway initially, but land acquisition is being carried out for a 6-lane configuration.
This forward-looking design ensures that future traffic expansion can be handled without major reconstruction or disruption.
Mega Bridge Over Kosi River
A major engineering highlight of the project is the 7.02 km long 6-lane bridge over the Kosi River, included under Package-2 of the expressway.
This bridge will connect Kusheshwar Asthan and Simri Bakhtiyarpur, significantly improving connectivity in flood-prone regions of North Bihar and easing mobility during monsoon disruptions.
Key Districts to Be Connected
The Patna–Purnia Expressway will pass through several important districts of Bihar, including:
- Vaishali
- Samastipur
- Darbhanga
- Saharsa
- Madhepura
- Purnia
Beyond Bihar, the corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity with neighboring regions, particularly Assam and West Bengal, making it a key interstate trade and travel route.
Economic and Social Impact Expected
The expressway is expected to deliver long-term socio-economic benefits, including:
- Faster movement of goods and services
- Growth of logistics and industrial hubs
- Improved access to markets for farmers
- Boost in tourism across North Bihar
- Creation of new job opportunities
Experts believe it will play a crucial role in reshaping Bihar’s economic landscape.
The Patna–Purnia NE-9 Expressway represents one of Bihar’s most ambitious infrastructure projects to date. With its approval progressing toward final clearance, the project is set to redefine road connectivity in the state, reduce travel time drastically, and open new avenues of development for millions of people across Bihar.
