Patna: In a significant welfare move, the Bihar Police has introduced an insurance benefit of ₹1.5 crore for police personnel who lose their lives in accidents while performing their duty. The initiative, tied to the new salary package managed through the Bank of Baroda, aims to offer enhanced financial security to the families of police officers facing life-threatening risks in the line of duty.
First Case: Constable’s Family Receives Full Benefit After Tragic Death on Atal Path
The first-ever claim under this new insurance scheme has been awarded to the family of a female constable who lost her life during a vehicle checking operation on Atal Path in Patna. A vehicle crushed the constable while she was on duty. Despite receiving medical care, she succumbed to her injuries. Her family has now been granted the full ₹1.5 crore insurance amount.
This is the first instance of such a large benefit being granted under the scheme and sets a precedent for future cases.

Part of a Comprehensive Salary Package with Bank of Baroda
The policy is part of a broader initiative under which the salary accounts of all police personnel across ranks have been shifted to Bank of Baroda. The collaboration includes several welfare features, the most significant being the insurance benefit in the event of accidental death during duty.
Speaking at a press conference at Police Headquarters, Sardar Patel Bhawan, ADG (Budget, Appeal, and Welfare) Dr. Kamal Kishore Singh provided detailed insights into the initiative.
Additional Support Beyond Insurance: Education, Health, and Welfare Funds
Dr. Singh also outlined various welfare measures in place:
Charitable Fund: ₹6.84 lakh to be distributed among 53 police personnel in need.
Education Fund: Now extended to postgraduate (PG) level, earlier limited to graduate education. This will support the children of police personnel.
Health Fund: Offers assistance for medical emergencies.
Police Assistance Welfare Fund: Provides ₹24,000 annually to the families of deceased personnel. This year, ₹32 lakh is being distributed among 83 families.
In total, 1,300 people are being supported through these various schemes.
Job on Compassionate Grounds
Dr. Singh also shared that Margaret Hansda, a traffic constable who died in Motihari in 2009, is another case where the family has received support. Her daughter has now been appointed to a government job on compassionate grounds.
Welfare First: A Step Toward Better Police Support
These initiatives reflect a growing focus on police welfare and ensuring that officers and their families are not left without support in the event of duty-related tragedies. The combination of insurance, education, and health benefits is aimed at creating a safety net for those who serve on the front lines of law enforcement.
