Patna: In a major push to strengthen policing and law enforcement, the Bihar Police will be equipped with modern drones, CCTVs, and upgraded forensic facilities across the state. The initiative aims to enhance surveillance, improve traffic management, and strengthen crime detection and prevention.
50 Drones to Strengthen Policing and Surveillance
The Bihar Police will purchase 50 drones by March 2026, according to Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Modernisation, Sudhanshu Kumar. As part of the plan, every district will receive at least one drone, capable of remaining airborne for 45 minutes, while 10 high-quality drones will be dedicated to the Special Task Force (STF) for enhanced surveillance in riverine areas.
The drones will be equipped with ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems, which will help monitor traffic violations and enforce road safety. Until now, the police have relied on private agencies for drone services on an hourly basis, but owning drones will give the department greater control and efficiency in operations.
“The drones will serve two main purposes: maintaining law and order, crowd management, and enabling the STF to monitor and prevent organized crimes in sensitive areas,” ADG Kumar said. Police personnel will receive specialized training to operate the drones effectively.
The project has been sanctioned with a budget of Rs 25 crore and approved by a high-powered committee on January 14.

CCTV Installation in Police Stations and Government Buildings
In addition to drones, the Bihar government has announced plans to install CCTVs in all police stations across the state and equip them with monitoring dashboards. These dashboards will allow police officials to track the real-time functioning of cameras and ensure better accountability.
The central government has approved Rs 112.46 crore for this project. Moreover, Rs 23.58 crore has been sanctioned this financial year for installing CCTVs in key government buildings, including the Old Secretariat, Vikas Bhawan, Vishweshwariah Bhawan, Soochna Bhawan, Sinchai Bhawan, and Adhiveshan Bhawan.
Seven New Forensic Science Laboratories to Become Operational
Following the implementation of three new criminal laws – the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) – which emphasize the use of forensic evidence, the central government has sanctioned Rs 162 crore for the establishment of seven new Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs).
Additionally, modernization work will be carried out at four existing FSLs located in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, and Purnea. ADG Kumar stated that the buildings for the seven new FSLs are ready, and they are expected to become operational by March 2026. The project is funded under the centrally sponsored “Scheme for Modernisation of Forensic Capacities.”
A Major Step Towards Modern Policing
These initiatives – drones, CCTV installation, and forensic modernization – reflect Bihar Police’s commitment to enhancing law enforcement capabilities, modernizing surveillance, and improving public safety. By integrating technology and modern infrastructure into policing, the state aims to ensure efficient crime prevention, faster investigation, and effective management of public order.
