Powers and Responsibilities of Rural SPs
The Rural SPs, created in September 2022 under Bihar Police Service, are entrusted with wide-ranging responsibilities to strengthen law enforcement:
- Supervision and inspection of subordinate police establishments.
- Review of cases and crime control measures.
- Maintaining crime registers, daily reports, and patrolling charts of their jurisdictions.
- Authority to suspend officers such as police inspectors and subordinates; police line officials’ suspension requires consultation with the District SP.
- Participation in weekly police parades and attendance at police assemblies.
- Reporting all significant matters to the District SP.
Objective: Strengthening Rural Policing
This move aims to enhance law enforcement in Bihar’s rural districts, improve accountability, and streamline administrative and operational control. By clearly defining jurisdiction and powers, the state government ensures that Rural SPs can act decisively to maintain law and order, monitor subordinate officers, and oversee policing activities efficiently.
