New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has made significant progress in its 4G rollout, with 50,708 sites installed and 41,957 of them now operational as of October 31, 2024. The equipment, which is 5G upgradable, began deployment in September 2023, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
4G Rollout Under Atmanirbhar Bharat
As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, BSNL has placed purchase orders for indigenously developed 4G sites for deployment across the country. The supply of equipment marks a major step towards enhancing the state-owned telecom firm’s service reach and network capabilities.
Future-Ready Network
“The equipment being installed is 5G upgradable, ensuring BSNL remains future-ready as it expands its infrastructure to cater to next-generation connectivity demands,” the minister stated in a written reply.
BCG’s Role in BSNL’s Revival
When asked about strategies for BSNL’s revival, including enhancements in 4G rollout and service quality, the minister confirmed that Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has submitted an interim report to BSNL management. The report includes strategies to expedite the 4G rollout, improve service standards, and introduce a generative AI chatbot for consumer support.
The rollout and strategic planning are part of BSNL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in the competitive telecom market while ensuring robust and reliable service for consumers across India.
