Patna: Bihar’s public transport system is set for a major expansion as the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) prepares to increase its fleet to more than 1,500 buses. The expansion, driven by the induction of PM e-Buses, AC deluxe and non-AC deluxe buses, is expected to improve connectivity, promote green mobility and benefit nearly 2 lakh passengers every day.

According to BSRTC, the corporation’s fleet will grow to 1,526 buses after the induction of 549 new vehicles. The move is expected to strengthen transport services across Bihar as well as interstate routes while making travel more reliable and affordable.

549 New Buses to Join the Fleet

The biggest addition will come under the Centre’s PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme.

Of the 400 electric buses allocated to Bihar, around 200 PM e-Buses are expected to be inducted by the end of this month.

The fleet expansion will also include:

  • 400 PM e-Buses (around 200 arriving this month)
  • 74 non-AC deluxe buses
  • 75 AC deluxe buses

These additions will significantly increase the corporation’s operational capacity and improve passenger services across the state.

Daily Passenger Capacity to Double

BSRTC currently operates over 960 buses, including services run under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. These buses collectively carry more than one lakh passengers every day.

With the addition of the new buses, the corporation expects daily ridership to cross 2 lakh passengers, making public transport more accessible and dependable for commuters.

The expansion is also expected to reduce overcrowding and improve service frequency on busy routes.

PM e-Buses for Six Major Divisions

The new air-conditioned electric buses will mainly operate in six major divisions of Bihar:

  • Patna
  • Gaya
  • Bhagalpur
  • Muzaffarpur
  • Darbhanga
  • Purnia

Some of these electric buses will be introduced as Pink Buses, dedicated to providing safer travel options for women.

Each electric bus is capable of travelling around 180 kilometres on a single charge, making them suitable for urban operations while reducing fuel costs and emissions.

Focus on Green and Sustainable Transport

Transport Department Secretary Shri Raj Kumar said the induction of electric buses marks another important step towards environmentally sustainable public transport.

He said the new fleet will reduce diesel consumption and carbon emissions, helping improve air quality in cities. BSRTC has already been promoting cleaner mobility through the operation of CNG and electric buses, and the latest expansion will further strengthen these efforts.

The secretary added that the initiative is aimed at making public transport cleaner, more efficient and more passenger-friendly.

Better Connectivity Across Bihar

Apart from improving city transport, the additional buses are expected to strengthen services on rural and interstate routes, providing better connectivity to people travelling for work, education and healthcare.

The government is also developing modern bus terminals and charging infrastructure to support the growing electric bus network. These facilities are expected to improve operational efficiency and ensure smooth deployment of the new fleet.

Officials believe the combined investment in buses and transport infrastructure will modernise Bihar’s public transport ecosystem while encouraging greater use of environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

A Major Step Towards Modern Public Transport

The expansion of the BSRTC fleet reflects Bihar’s efforts to modernise public transport through cleaner technology and improved connectivity. With more electric buses, enhanced infrastructure and a larger fleet, the initiative is expected to make daily travel safer, more comfortable and more affordable while supporting sustainable urban and regional mobility.
